What a day, worthy of reverence,

which tongues fall short of thanking,

for the recovery of our lord, under whom was uprooted

the very root of the oppressors in his time—

even had it brought nothing but his turning

Abu al-Rayyan's plot back upon his own throat,

and his having dashed that man's hopes

and shattered the desires within his breast!

He hoped—may God never ordain it—that

what he conceals in his inmost self might become manifest,

until the people discerned from his face

what Satan had pictured in his mind.

So, O Commander of the Faithful, act upon

what prudence demands in his case.

Cleanse the lands of justice of his oppression,

and purify Islam of his unbelief.

And remove from the state what has disquieted it:

his humiliating disgrace and his intractability.

And remedy past neglect in his case,

and fear for Baghdad because of his scheming,

for the ill luck he brings may lay it waste.

May the Most Merciful never bless his life.
