Indeed, we entered your bathhouse and saw

a marvel in the joining of two opposites:

its water and fuel alike are cold,

so to the bather it is a vexation to the eye.

Within it is an odious, coarse attendant,

scowling of face, with nostrils drawn back.

An attendant, but no good one; rough is his

razor, though both his palms are soft.

With one hand like silk, unable to lift the

dirt from the shoulders by its rubbing,

and another whose repeated strokes leave

people wounded—may such a pair of hands be palsied!

So exact retribution from him for me, for he has

destroyed me with wounds in both neck veins.
