    Time, O sons of Ma‘mar,

has sins on your account that cannot be forgiven.

    It gave you lavish abundance,

though you were more deserving of denial.

And you ruled the world, and were found

    more unjust than al-Hajjaj.

In every region there is, from among you,

an unjust governor who has lived long

as a tyrant—never did they warn

him of his Lord without his growing more tyrannical.

    Fierce in temper, like

an angry lion when it turns savage.

And Time has indeed humbled, through its reversals,

a band of you, giving ample warning.

So those who went before will surely be joined

in calamity by those who remain behind.

You lorded it over the downtrodden,

    in arrogance—yet God is greater.

And you came to possess power,

so you killed ruthlessly—yet God is more powerful.

    Yours are records of wrongdoing,

for which you will be requited the day they are unfolded,

    and a shameful legacy in

your wake, recounted and handed down.

A people whose neighbor is wronged in

their homes, and whose pledges are broken.

They are known for ingratitude toward kindness,

and are still more ungrateful for God's bounty.

And they approve of breaking covenants, so

they are more treacherous than the days.
