Through your exalted fortune, time itself rejoices.
With your great ancestry, time becomes auspicious,
And all pride culminates in your glory.
And pride culminates in your honor.
أَقبَلتَyou came وَالإِقبالُand good fortune فيin قَرَنٍa shared yoke

You came, with good fortune bound to you,
You came at an opportune time,
and you arrived, with victory leading your army.
And your army arrived with victory at hand.
وَتَوَحَّشَتand grew desolate بَغداذُBaghdad لاmay she not عَدِمَتlose

And Baghdad grew desolate—may she never lose
Baghdad became desolate without you,
her solace in you—and the palace grew grim.
Losing its sociability, and the palace frowned.

Do not belittle the length of separation for her,
Do not underestimate the duration of separation from it,
for a single hour is a month to her.
For an hour to it is like a month.
أَتُلامُis she to be blamed? إِنif أَبدَتshe reveals كَآبَتَهاher sorrow

Is she to blame if she reveals her sorrow—
Should I blame it for showing its sorrow?
a land with the rain falling elsewhere?
It is a land that rain falls on through no one else but you.
