They said: Abu al-Rayyan is the full brother

    of Usama ibn Muqallad,

of one father and mother; they drink,

both of them, from one watering place.

And both are from the worst of houses,

    built up through wickedness.

Why, then, is the gap between them like that

between the earth and the star al-Farqad?

This one's face is grim, while the face

of Usama is cheerful and fresh.

And it is as though this one were fashioned from

earthenware, and that one from pure gold.

And Usama is the keen, polished sword,

and that one the blunt, rusty one.

And Usama wears the mantle of bounty,

while that one is a worthless fool.

And that one spends the night upon a bed

    made firm with debauchery;

while this one spends the night in the station

of a humble worshipper keeping nightly vigil.

And this one's right hand is a rain cloud

    for the supplicant seeking gifts;

and that one's right hand seems

to have been made of solid rock.

    And you see Abu al-Rayyan—

he has no air of nobility:

    tight-fisted, scowling of

    face, shackled of hand.

And Usama bears the marks of

the generous chieftain, the noble lord:

    sweet in character, radiant of

    countenance, with a sweet wellspring.

He has the composure of a just man,

    humble and affectionate;

and that one the harshness of an oppressor,

    overbearing and rebellious.

Woe to him on the Day

    of Resurrection—what a wretched outcast!

His inner thoughts are foul; no good

    has noble birth done him,

nor the whiteness of his clothes over

the pages of a blackened honor.

So they are, then, two trunks from

    a root of noble lineage:

this trunk has, in the brothel,

its lodging; that one, in the mosque.
