Someone save me from Abu Bishr—
Who will vindicate me against Abu Bishr?
for my patience is entangled with him.
For he has exhausted my patience.
مَتىwhenever يَأُخُذُhe takes مِنfrom ماليmy money
وَيُعطينيand he gives me عَلىin return for شِعريmy poetry
Whenever he takes from my wealth
Whenever he takes some of my money
and pays me for my poetry,
and pays me for my poetry,
فَماso not يَنفَكُّhe escapes لَوif فَكfirst part of 'he reflected'
كَرَcompletion of 'he reflected' فيin الحالَينِthe two cases مِنfrom خُسرِloss
he never lets up: if he lets go,
he never escapes—if he would reflect—
he comes back—either way, to my loss.
loss in either case:
فَلاso not ذِمَّتَهُhis debt يُبريhe discharges
فَلاso not يَحصِدُhe reaps بِالشُكرِwith thanks
Thus he neither clears his debt
he neither discharges his debt
nor reaps a harvest of thanks.
nor reaps any thanks.
