نَجمَstar العُلىof glory وَخِدنَهاand its companion
Say to Karim al-Din: O
star of glory and its companion,
قَصائِدُpoems المَدحِof praise الَّتيthat
تِهتَyou boasted بِهاof them كَأَنَّهاas though they were
the praise-poems that
you took pride in seem,
مِنbecause of قُبحِهاtheir ugliness وَالجَهلُand ignorance فيin
عَينَيكَyour eyes قَدindeed حَسَّنَهاhas beautified them
in their ugliness—though ignorance
has made them fair in your eyes—
وازِنَةٌweighty لاnot يَستَخِفُّfind light
السامِعونَthe listeners وَزنَهاtheir weight (meter)
weighty: never do
listeners find their meter light.
فَماfor ... not أَرىI see أَبرَدَcolder مِنthan
فَنِّكَyour art إِلّاexcept فَنَّهاtheir art
For I see nothing colder than
your art except their art.
دَوَّنتَهاyou recorded them عُجباًin admiration بِهاof them
وَاللَهُand God قَدindeed دَوَّنَهاhas recorded them
You recorded them, admiring them,
and God has indeed recorded them.
عَينُكَyour eye إِنif قَرَّتwas gladdened (cooled) بِهاby them
فَاللَهُthen God قَدindeed سَخَّنَهاhas heated it (grieved it)
If your eye has cooled with joy in them,
then God has surely heated it with grief.
