O you who make the vast sea choke on its own water,
remain safe: the envious one has perished of his own disease.
الحامِلَyou who bear العِبءَthe burden الثَقيلَthe heavy بِكاهِلٍupon a shoulder

You who bear the heavy burden on a shoulder
whose loads include the summits of towering hills;

and you who illumine it like early day, when it has opened wide [unclear],
with piercing resolves born of his counsels;
وَمُبيدَand you who scatter شَملِthe gathered mass المالِof wealth حَتّىuntil خِلتَهُI thought it

and you who scatter wealth's gathered store, until I thought it
had come to rival him for his lofty station.

When the sea of Iraq overflowed, roaring,
once again, raging with its flotsam,

it laid its neck upon the open earth,
until its fish met its gazelles.
وَرَمىand it hurled التِلاعَthe hills بِمِثلِهاwith their like مِنfrom مَوجِهِits waves الthe (continued)

It hurled against the hills their like in its waves,
surging high, and left its earth like its sky.
يَطَأُit treads upon الشَواهِقَthe towering peaks وَالإِكامَand the hillocks بِخَطوِهِwith its stride

It treads upon towering peaks and hillocks with its stride,
and trails its cloak's long hem across the desert.
أَخجَلتَهُyou shamed it بِنَوالِكِwith your bounty الغَمرِthe abundant الَّذيwhich
غَمَرَflooded البِلادَthe lands فَجاشَso it surged لِاِستِحيائِهِout of its shame
You shamed it with your abundant bounty, which
flooded the lands, so it surged out of shame.
حَتّىso that لَقَدindeed ظَنَّthought العَدُوُّthe enemy بِجَهلِهِin his ignorance
مِمّاfrom what رَأىhe saw أَنthat لَستَyou were not مِنamong أَكفائِهِhis equals
So the enemy, in his ignorance, indeed imagined,
from what he saw, that you were not his equal.
أَردَيتَهُyou laid him low بِالرَأيِby counsel قَبلَbefore نِزالِهِcombat with him
وَقَذَفتَهُand you assailed him بِالرُعبِwith terror قَبلَbefore لِقائِهِmeeting him
You laid him low by counsel before doing battle with him,
and assailed him with terror before meeting him.
وَرَدَدتَهُand you drove him back وَزَئيرُwhile the roar of بَأسِكَyour might خارِقٌwas piercing
سَمعَيهِhis two ears مِنfrom قُدّامِهِbefore him وَوَرائِهِand behind him
You drove him back, the roar of your might piercing
both his ears, from before him and behind.
وَلّىhe turned عَلىupon الأَعقابِhis heels يَجمَعُgathering نَفسَهُhimself

He turned upon his heels, gathering himself together,
like a great serpent slipping from its sloughed skin.
ياO بَحرُsea كَيفَhow طَلَبتَdid you seek شَأوَthe reach of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad

مَهلاًhold back فَلَستَfor you are not اليَومَtoday مِنamong نُظَرائِهِhis peers
O sea, how did you seek to match Muhammad's reach?
Hold back: today you are no peer of his.
هَذاthis is الَّذيhe through whom أَمسىbecame الأَنامُmankind بجودِهِthrough his generosity
أَسرىcaptives وَظَلّواyet they remained اليَومَtoday مِنamong طُلَقائِهِthose he freed
This is he through whose generosity mankind became
captives, yet today they remain his freedmen.
فَهُمُso they وَقَدwhen already حَضَرَcame upon النُفوسَthe souls حِمامُهاtheir death

عُتَقاؤُهُhis freedmen وَهُمُyet they are عَبيدُslaves of عَطائِهِhis bounty
So they—when death had already come upon their souls—
are his freedmen, yet slaves to his bounty.
إِنif يَكفُروكَthey are ungrateful to you فَلَستَthen you are not أَوَّلَthe first مُنعِمٌbenefactor

If they are ungrateful to you, you are not the first benefactor
whose favors the hand of ingratitude has assailed.

his deeds and seeking to match his generosity,
ماnot أَنتُمُyou are مِمَّنamong those who يَسُدُّfill مَسَدَّهُhis place

you are not among those who could fill his place
even for a day, nor render service like his.

How could you attain his dignity and sound judgment,
his loyalty, proud spirit, and decisive resolve?

O you—what shielded me from my age's vicissitudes was that I
had become, among mankind, one of his poets.

You matched Noah in the deliverance his ark brought,
and shared with the Spirit of God in his restoring life.

لَكَfor you ماwhat أَتَيتَyou have done وَأَنتَwhen you are مِنamong أَبنائِهِhis descendants
Following in Kisra's footsteps; nor is it strange
for you to do what you have done, being one of his descendants.
ماnot ماتَhas died مَنhe whose أَصبَحتَyou have become وَاِرثَthe inheritor of مَجدِهِhis glory

He whose glory you have inherited has not died,
ever, nor has anyone whose successor you have been.

May a gift bring joy to the Commander of the Faithful,
God's gift in you, counted among His blessings.

وَعِبادِهِand his subjects وَحَمَلتَand you bore مِنsome of أَعبائِهِhis burdens
You defended his sanctuary and his lands,
and his subjects, and bore a share of his burdens.

Never did he call for your help in a scene of battle
but you rose in answer to his call.

So let him surely praise God, as long as you are among
the members of his state and his trusted intimates.

House of al-Muzaffar, you are the star
whose light alone can guide the falcon.

And religion's pillar is raised by his glory,
and by his crown, his arrows, and his splendor.

A people who, when time falls ill, possess
the skill of a physician who knows its cure.

And when the years follow one another with their droughts,
they give freely, though the cloud withholds its water.

May every man who falls short in glory be your ransom,
wanting in himself, a burden on his forefathers.

You have never ceased giving, while he is branded miserly,
until I became devoted to praising you and lampooning him.

So the rhymes of poetry shall surely thank you as long as
time alternates between its morning and its evening.
