يا مَن رَعَيتُ لَهُ الوِدادَ تَمَسُّكاً

يا مَن رَعَيتُ لَهُ الوِدادَ تَمَسُّكاً

بِعُهودِهِ فَغَدا لِعَهدي نابِذا

بِعُهودِهِ فَغَدا لِعَهدي نابِذا

O one for whom I preserved affection, holding fast

O you whose affection I tended, clinging

to his pledges, yet he came to cast my pledge aside.

To his vows, yet to mine a violator became,

وَمَنِ اِدَّرَعتُ الصَبرَ عَنهُ فَأَرسَلَت

وَمَنِ اِدَّرَعتُ الصَبرَ عَنهُ فَأَرسَلَت

عَيناهُ سَهماً في المَقاتِلِ نافِذا

عَيناهُ سَهماً في المَقاتِلِ نافِذا

And one whose absence I bore with patience as armor—then

And he whose patience I armored against, then unleashed

his eyes sent an arrow piercing my vital parts.

His eyes an arrow piercing foes aimed,

غادَرتَني نَدِماً أُقَلِّبُ راحَةً

غادَرتَني نَدِماً أُقَلِّبُ راحَةً

في الحُبِّ خاسِرَةً وَأَقرُعُ ناجِذا

في الحُبِّ خاسِرَةً وَأَقرُعُ ناجِذا

You left me remorseful, turning over a palm

You left me regretful, a solace I turn

that has lost in love, and striking a molar in regret.

In love losing and crop-eared braying,

لا تُصغِ فيَّ إِلى الوُشاةِ وَلا تَكُن

لا تُصغِ فيَّ إِلى الوُشاةِ وَلا تَكُن

لي بِاِجتِرامِ الكاشِحينَ مُواخِذا

لي بِاِجتِرامِ الكاشِحينَ مُواخِذا

Do not heed the slanderers concerning me, nor

Listen not to the slanderers of me, nor be

hold me accountable for the wrongdoing of the spiteful.

For my crimes with the vituperative chiding,

أَنا مُستَجيرٌ مِن صُدودِكَ عائِذٌ

أَنا مُستَجيرٌ مِن صُدودِكَ عائِذٌ

إِن كُنتَ تَرحَمُ مُستَجيراً عائِذا

إِن كُنتَ تَرحَمُ مُستَجيراً عائِذا

I seek protection from your turning away, seeking refuge,

I seek refuge from your estrangement, taking cover,

if you have mercy on one seeking protection and refuge.

If you pity a refuge-seeking coverer.
