    O Ibn al-Dawami, who is a refuge

and a mainstay for the hopeful and those seeking shelter.

If a friend's character is hidden, you have virtues

radiant, gentler than the temperate breeze.

Men's affections have grown ragged and threadbare,

yet your old bond remains intact, unworn.

O you whose bounty relieves every need,

and whose two hands open every bolted door.

You never cease to astonish with your generosity, inventive

in it, and blazing paths through it never blazed before.

Until you sent, showing kindness and varied skill

in generous deeds, sugar and violets.

Like the sweet saliva of the one I love, and a fading mark

from a bite upon his crimson-flushed cheek.

This gift's whiteness puts silver to shame,

and its blueness vaunts itself above turquoise.

You offered them in affection, bringing what is sweet

and pure, and a fragrance that gladdens.

You reminded me of sweet qualities of yours,

white, and of kindness whose fragrance spreads.

So take this praise for yourself, pure and unalloyed,

    unmixed with affectation or flattery.

And wear of it—may blame pass you by—a striped robe,

which, but for the affection between us, would not have been woven.
