أَباO father of الجودِgenerosity ماnot ناديكَyour gathering place بِالجودِwith generosity مَعمورُfilled
وَلاnor بِيَدِby the hand of الإِحسانِkindness راجيكَone who hopes in you مَغمورُshowered
O Abu al-Jud, your gathering place is not filled with generosity;
O generous one, neither the generous one hopes for you
Nor is one who hopes in you showered by the hand of kindness.
Nor the deprived one seeks you through benevolence
لَؤُمتَyou have been base فَلاso not مَنwhoever ظَلَّkept يَهجوكَlampoons you فيamong الوَرىhumankind
مَلومٌblameworthy وَلاnor مَنwhoever باتَspent the night يَرجوكَhopes in you مَعذورُexcused
You are base: no one who keeps lampooning you among humankind
You are blamed, so none who reviles you in the world
Is blameworthy, nor is one who spends the night hoping in you excused.
Is blamed, nor he who spends the night hoping for you, excused
وَمازِلتَand you have always been مُعتَلَّflawed in الخِلالِcharacter traits مُذَمَّماًmuch reviled
فَعِرضُكَso your honor مَنقوصٌdiminished وَمالُكَand your wealth مَقصورُwithheld
And you have always been flawed in character, much reviled;
You have always been of imperfect character, miserable
So your honor is diminished, and your wealth withheld.
So your honor is diminished and your wealth restricted
تَمُدُّyou stretch out إِلىtoward الإِحسانِkindness كَفّاًa hand بَنانُهاits fingertips
يُناطُis attached بِهِto it زَندٌa wrist مِنَfrom الخَيرِgoodness مَبتورُsevered
You stretch toward kindness a hand whose fingertips
You extend for benevolence a palm whose fingers
Are joined to a wrist severed from goodness.
Are tied with a severed fortune of goodness
رِداءٌa cloak عَلىover الخِذلانِabandonment وَالشُؤمِand ill fortune مُسبَلٌdraped
وَذَيلٌand a hem عَلىover الفَحشاءِindecency وَالعارِand shame مَزرورُfastened
A cloak draped over abandonment and ill fortune,
A cloak upon betrayal and ill omens, deployed
And a hem fastened over indecency and shame.
And a train upon indecency and shame, dragged
حَوَيتَyou have amassed المَخازيdisgraces خِسَّةًbaseness وَدَناءَةًand vileness
وَلُؤماًand meanness فَلاso no خَيرٌgoodness لَدَيكَwith you وَلاand no خيرُgenerosity
You have amassed disgraces—baseness and vileness,
You have harbored vulgarity, baseness,
And meanness—so there is neither goodness nor generosity in you.
And villainy, so there is with you neither good nor goodness
بَقيتَmay you remain لِأَحداثِfor the calamities of اللَياليthe nights دَرِيَّةًa target
وَلَيُّكَyour ally مَخذولٌforsaken وَشانيكَand your hater مَنصورُvictorious
May you remain a target for the calamities of the nights,
You remained for the events of nights, unaware,
Your ally forsaken, and your hater victorious.
While your night is abandoned and your hater victorious
تُحارِبُكَwage war on you الأَيّامُthe days مِنfrom بَعدِafter سِلمِهاtheir peace
وَأَنتَand you ذَليلٌabased فيin يَدِthe hand of الدَهرِTime مَقهورُsubdued
The days wage war on you after their peace,
The days fight you after their peace
And you are abased in the hand of Time, subdued.
And you are humiliated, subjugated by fate
فَلاso never زِلتَmay you cease to be مَوتورَwronged by اللَياليthe nights وَصَرفِهاand their vicissitudes
كَماjust as الفَضلُvirtue فيin أَيّامِكَyour days السودِdark مَوتورُwronged
So may you never cease to be wronged by the nights and their vicissitudes,
You have thus remained deprived of the nights and their days
Just as virtue is wronged in your dark days.
As generosity in your black days remained severed
حَريمُكَyour womenfolk مَبذولٌfreely available وَرَبعُكَand your dwelling موحِشٌdesolate
وَشَملُكَand your unity مَصدوعٌshattered وَبابُكَand your door مَهجورُdeserted
Your womenfolk are freely available, and your dwelling desolate;
Your sanctum is violated, your abode deserted
And your unity is shattered, and your door deserted.
And your robe torn, your door abandoned
