My love for you has exhausted my resources

for patient endurance, and my fortitude has betrayed me.

My eye has rejected sleep, and does not

know anything but tears and sleeplessness.

O you who bring abandonment and separation together

upon a lover alone with longing,

may you never suffer after me, despite your cruelty, what

I have suffered of wasting illness and anguish.

What emboldened you to kill was that the one who ordained

love decreed no life-for-life retribution within it,

and that, in my love for you, I confess

that my eye was the offender, and my hand too.

Your cheek has given me proof through what

it kindled of love's fire upon my liver:

    indeed, burning mirrors burn whatever

    their light strikes from afar.

I swear by a gaze that strikes the carefree dead,

its arrows lying in ambush for hearts,

and by a downy cheek—since I chanced to love it,

I have exposed my heart to worry and anguish:

were it not declaring war against me, it would not

    have faced me clad in chain mail;

and by a mouth like pearls strung together, though

it left my tears like pearls scattered loose:

I sipped from it—what heat of burning longing

the sipping of that hail brought upon me!

Indeed, you, with the strength for which you are known,

have a firmer hold on my body than I do.
