My lord Fakhr al-Din, toward generosity you are

swift, while others hang back and tarry.

You have lodged whoever hopes in you in the most spacious abode,

and spread the finest carpet for whoever hopes in you.

And you struck the timbers of glory with a resolve

to which hopes were bound—what a bond!

O fulfiller of promises, in an age when

its people urged one another to withhold and deny,

far be it from you to accept that my allowance should be

like that of the doorkeeper and the naphtha-thrower:

black as night, its price per qafiz [the text reads 'verse']

ranging from a tassuj to a qirat.

    Calamities have ravaged it, and

the morning has gone to excess with it—what excess!

It has clouded my luminous perception and altered

my sound constitution, and putrefied my humors.

So take charge of my treatment; I have already reported what

I suffer from in my illness to Hippocrates.
