My gratitude for the flood of your abundant bounty

Is the gardens' gratitude for the downpour of rain.

O you, through whose generous palm I am safe

From what I once feared from Time.

Through your bounty, O son of Abu al-Mada, there passed

From us the age of misery and hardship.

And through Shams al-Din's generosity, there dawned for me

Good fortune, and Time became my ally again.

But for Emir Muhammad, erased would be

The paths of guidance and the landmarks of goodness.

    Master of generosity, eloquence, and

    Boldness, kindness, and good cheer.

Fragrant of character in his lordship,

Sweet in his wit, pleasant in his fragrance.

His mantle brims with bounty; his breast is free

Of hatred and rancor toward others.

The radiance of his brow dispels the darkness,

And the full moon's rising places envy him.

Humble toward his petitioners; exalted are

His virtues, which rise above arrogance.

Possessed of resolve like a blazing fire,

And a character like water and wine,

And a hand whose full reach exceeds

In bounty, the bounty of rain and sea.

O son of those who hung their glorious deeds

At the stations of al-Ayyuq and al-Nasr.

You are the one who clothed me in blessings

Whose weight my gratitude cannot bear.

How many favors you have granted me, too heavy

For poetry's strength to bear for you!

You have kept drawing across the soil of my hope,

In generosity, the clouds of your copious giving,

Until, describing your bounty, I became

Wearied in inspiration, exhausted in thought.

Time's excuses ran short because of

The stinginess and treachery among people.

It counted them one by one, yet there was not

One noble soul among them in its register.

So today, through your bounty, it has become

Forgiven its sins, its excuses amply accepted.

As though it were a night that smiled from

Your face's brilliance, revealing the radiance of dawn.

Hearts grew calm at your return, though they

Had been in dread at its long delay.

And you alighted in Iraq's Zawra, as

Clouds alight upon parched desert ground.

As though your appearance were the crescent,

Watched for by eyes on the night of Eid al-Fitr.

    So enjoy God's month, rejoicing

In glad tidings of good fortune and victory.

We congratulate each on his coming,

And through you, the month's coming is a joy.

And listen to a virgin with budding breasts,

Adorned with praise of you, freeborn and untouched:

Praises that, like the gardens' breaths, stole forth

Late at night, unsealing caskets of perfume.
