1. لا أَوحَشَ اللَهُ مِمَّن

    بِهِ يَتِمُّ السُرورُ

    May God not leave us bereft of one

    through whom joy is complete;

  2. وَمِن مُرادِ ذَوي الفَض

    مِن طيبِها وَعَبيرُ

    And whose qualities are musk,

    so fragrant are they, and blended perfume;

  6. كَالماءِ شيبَت بِهِ الرا

    حُ وَهوَ عَذبٌ نَميرُ

    Like water with which wine is mingled,

    itself sweet and limpid;

  7. عِرضٌ أَريجٌ نَقِيٌّ

    كَأَنَّهُ الكافورُ

    A reputation fragrant and pure,

    as though it were camphor;

  8. وَنورُ وَجهٍ كَما أَس

    فَرَ الصَباحُ المُنيرُ

    And the radiance of a face, as when

    the shining morning breaks;

    رِ رَوضَةٌ وَغَديرُ

    In it, from beauty and good cheer,

    are a garden and a pool.

  10. أَما وَمُهرَقِ خَدٍّ

    لِلحُسنِ فيهِ سُطورُ

    Indeed, by the parchment of a cheek

    on which beauty has its lines,

  11. تُزهي بِجَورِيِّ وَردٍ

    عَلى القُلوبِ تَجورُ

    Glowing with Damask roses,

    it tyrannizes over hearts;

    It kindles fire, while the water of

    And by every dusky maiden who

    shuns her lover;

  15. هَيفاءَ تَشقى بِحَملِ ال

    دُرداقِ مِنها الخُصورُ

    Slender, whose waists strain to bear

    the little ones they carry;

  16. كَالظَبيِ وَالظَبيُ أَحوى

    ساجي اللِحاظِ غَريرُ

    Like a gazelle, a dusky gazelle,

    languid of glance, guileless—

  17. إِنَّ المُوَفَّقَ بِال

    A lineage forbids him pride—

    Poetry's wares in the market

    of his generosity never go unsold;

    Abu Ali, may you be spared

    Though her courtyards be empty of you,

    spacious as they are, and her palaces,

    وَخاطِرٌ وَضَميرُ

    no heart is empty of you,

    nor thought, nor inmost consciousness.

    مِن مُقلَتَيهِ المُديرُ

    He makes them still more maddening

    with his eyes—the cupbearer;

    fire, and in the house, light;

  44. عَذراءَ أَوصى قَديماً

    كِسرى بِها أَردَشيرُ

    A virgin wine, commended long ago

    by Kisra Ardashir;

    Unmixed, all-pervading wine, almost

    sending sparks flying;

    At evening their garlands are

    so long as their mouths permit you.

  52. هَذا هُوَ الرَأيُ فَاِقبَل

    مِمَّن عَلَيكَ يُشيرُ

    قَد هَذَّبَتهُ الدُهورُ

    And heed the counsel of a friend

    whom the ages have refined;

    His evening visits to revelry

    are constant, and his morning visits too;

  55. وَاُنظُر لِنَفسِكَ وَالعو

    إِن عَصَيتَ كَفورُ

    And you, Ibn al-Dawami,

    are ungrateful if you disobey.
