Make use of your youth, and seize

in your days of health, the round loaves [perhaps intended: opportunities].

You buy sins at a high price,

    and sell your faith cheaply.

Do you not see that youth’s shade

has already receded from your cheek?

Turn away from this world, tainted

    with calamities and choking griefs.

How often she has made her children swallow

bitter misery through her deadly violence against them!

And know, whenever you gain more

wealth, that your lifespan has diminished.

And tomorrow you will see it in the hands of the

    heirs, divided into shares.

And look to the bird of your soul,

    imprisoned in this cage,

until you see it, from fears

    and hardships, set free.
