    Jaʿfar’s garden is like him

    In elegance and character.

    And the spacious pool blushes

At his bounty and his gifts.

Within it are the pipes that

    Pour forth like his fingertips.

Oh, how delightful the breeze’s love

For its ben trees and thickets,

    And the waterwheel’s singing in

    Its mornings and late afternoons.

And the water is like snakes in

    Its flow and its channels.

And the clouds have fulfilled the false promises

Of their lightning and their signs of rain.

And the garden—there have come to you the breaths

Of the east wind, bearing its messages.

And the branch, like a drunken man, stumbles

In the trailing folds of its thin robes.

And the cup has caught intoxication

From the glances of its bearer.

And many a day have I given

Truth, on that day, to its falsehood.

And I bought the present joy I had at hand

    With its future share.

So alike in beauty were the closing hours

Of our day and its first hours.
