And how many days frown at me while I smile!

Why do calamities strike me down with their arrows,
Misfortunes do not make me deaf by their arrows,
shooting to kill? Yet they kill, not disgrace.
Shooting at me - yet they make me deaf, I do not resist.

youth without lofty glory is old age.
Youthfulness in other than the exalted is decrepitude.

To every day belongs a friend I do not abandon,

And a firm bond from a beloved whose home I covet.

distance nor time makes you forget love's covenant.
Does absence and remoteness of passion not make you forget?

Why weep now when these people are united?

from sipping it, though its cool water was my cure.
Though my cure were its pure drink.

one she had enchanted thought them ʿanam twigs.
Thinks they are anemones - but on those fingers, the adornment is blood.

Maḥmūd, beloved of all creatures - oaths are kept with him.

and every land bears a landmark of his generosity.
And they shiver when his name is pronounced.

The proud neck of his foe submits, without objection or breach.

For thoughts of its like are sterile.
