How I marvel! And the happenings of

    time are full of marvels.

    Its vicissitudes have left me

    no desire for any pleasure.

Gone is the delight of the

    days of golden youth.

And worn away is the freshness of the

    new garments of youth.

And the fair, statue-like beauties were driven away

by the whiteness of my graying temple.

And there have sprouted in my locks

    rising lights like shooting stars,

    heralding that I shall depart

    soon after them.

And whatever rises and shines must

    inevitably have its setting.

Alas for my life, in the hands

    of a snatcher, a plunderer!

It is plundered by the returning

nights and the succession of ages.

My times have refined me, though

    my times themselves are unrefined.

    And the trials of the

days have unleashed the edge of my blade.

O vast expanse of days, how

narrow is my path within you!

    And, O nights, unveil yourselves

with good fortune—or else veil yourselves.

For my shoulder does not yield

to the firm grip of calamities.

    And a companion, wavering in

    judgment, strange in his ways,

leaves me tossed back and forth

    between favor and anger.

    I am neither banished

far away, nor one who draws near.

I serve him in nakedness and

    hunger and prolonged toil.

Oh, what an affliction it is,

    one I count among calamities!

With him I have the watering-place of a

parched man, and a hungry man's pasture.

If only, since he will not

be generous to me, he would let me go!
