Hail, abode of love—what an abode!

May the night-traveling clouds never pass you by,

Laden like she-camels ten months pregnant,

    Weeping abundant tears

Upon the earth of your deserted remains.

How many short nights of love

Passed within you just as I wished!

In them I attained whatever desires I pleased,

    أَشرَبُها بِجَذوَةٍ مِن نارِ

    Slaughtering sorrow with wine.

    I drink it with a glowing ember of fire;

    Its bubbles throw out sparks,

Red, or yellow as a dinar,

    Like flowing molten gold.

So delicate it escapes the eyes,

You would imagine it, in its circulating cup,

A lightning flash passing through darkness.

The dark one among my night companions spent the night with it,

His cheeks embroidered with youthful down,

Casting a glance with finely sharpened edges,

With kohl and redness in his eyes,

And slenderness and trimness at the waist,

And a stature that furnished my excuses.

His saliva is like freshly gathered honey,

    And his buttocks are heavier than my sins;

My patience dwindles from bearing him.

And a doll-like beauty with a short girdle,

Filling out her anklet and bracelet,

Like the full moon traveling through heaven,

    Above waning and moonless concealment,

Shining from the openings of her buttons.

    خَلَعتُ في الحُبِّ بِها عِذاري

    I fell in love with her in the wine-seller's tavern;

For love of her I threw off my bridle.

What has a devotee of passion to do with dignity?

And my veils have always been torn away.

    I espouse the face-veil and the head-veil,

And drinking in taverns, and gambling,

And I love youths and slave-girls.

I live in this world as I choose,

Before the things on loan are reclaimed.

Rarely have I thought about poverty,

Or feared the perils of a hangover.

    I give generously in hardship and prosperity;

The very profit lay in loss.

And a garden of delightful flowers,

    Musky, its breaths richly fragrant,

Leafy in its branches and trees,

    Among gardens untouched and virgin,

Praising the downpour of abundant rain

With the tongues of buttercups and arar flowers.

We smile at the blossoms' smiling mouths,

Of fresh narcissus and pomegranate blossom.

A generous downpour spent the night there,

And morning found its expanses embroidered

In robes of anemones and yellow daisies.

Like a perfumer's load of fragrances,

    It breathed sandalwood and laurel.

A running brook flowed before it,

Sweet, still fresh from the rain,

    Clear of debris and murk,

Finer than my tears and than poetry.

It reveals its secrets to the arriving drinker,

Until he sees what has sunk to the bottom.

I came to it early; for high deeds I rise early,

While night had turned its back,

And its army was preparing to flee,

Beguiling us with the beguiling star.

The birds had not yet left their nests,

And dawn had announced the stirring to flight.

With bright young men of high standing,

    Noble, generous, freeborn,

Known for truthfulness in their reports,

And every archer, a hero charging again and again,

A mighty man striding into dangers,

Like a fierce lion of the lair,

    Gallant, fearing nothing but disgrace,

Of pure branches and unsullied stock,

    Refined, bare of every shame.

    Until daylight's kindling fire-stick sparked,

    Clothing the horizons in light,

    And flocks of birds approached

In a vast host from their marching army,

    Differing in direction and flight,

With many-colored shirts and ragged garments.

Some white, like the fuller's bundles,

    Conspicuous as a daring horseman,

You would think one part of daylight's brightness,

    From its whiteness and redness,

    Compounded of hail and fire.

And a piebald one, its waist-wrap tucked up,

    Its red waist-wrap like wine,

In a coat with unfastened buttons,

    Fashioned from night and day.

And one of thriving kin, far from home,

Its forehead yellow as a dinar,

Like a dhimmi in distinguishing dress,

Smooth of forehead, black of cheek-down,

As though its eyelid-rims were pitch.

Doom drove it toward its destined fate.

So they came out to forage in the open,

Certain that their lives were short,

Upon the edge of a crumbling bank.

    A longing to hasten stirred us;

We turned to dark bows, pitch in color,

    Already gleaming with pure gold.

    يُطلِقُها مِن رِبقَةِ الإِسارِ

    The knots of their coverings are loosened;

He releases them from captivity's tether,

    Like ravening black snakes,

    Ascribed to swaying reeds,

Sent toward fire—and what a fire!

He has no rival in skill.

Their twang in the darkness before dawn

Is sweeter to me than the tones of strings.

Excellent is the choice of the chosen master:

Its beauty delights the eyes of onlookers,

    But their effects are ugly.

    Beware their arrows—beware!

For they are sharper than blades

And than the points of keen spears.

    كَأَنَّها قُذفٌ مِنَ الأَحجارِ

    Alike in length and size,

    They seem like stone projectiles;

Their small ones are deadlier than their large.

    Rising through the stirred-up dust,

Faster than the calamities of fate,

    With such unfeathered arrows

The watchful flier's wing was broken.

They kill it outright before the draw and the rush,

Burrowing through its breast into a cavity,

As a fox enters its den.

Woe to every tightly twisted, firmly plied cord,

Made firm by close twisting and plying,

Yellow, yet not faulted for yellowness,

In the hand of one who benefits, yet harms with it!

    فَلَم يَزَل في لُجَجِ الغَمارِ

    His right hand was supported by his left;

He continued amid the depths of the fray,

Hurrying his shots at them without a pause,

Shot upon shot, like flames of fire,

    Subtler than signaling secrets.

Then, by the Almighty's power, they scattered

    Around the archers—what a scattering!

Like the battle of al-Kilab or Dhi Qar.

Had you seen them in the streaming blood,

    Their necks and eyes bowed,

Scratching in soft sand and loose soil,

    Their limbs and parts bleeding,

    Struck with humiliation and abasement,

    With few helpers or supporters,

You would have thought them the butcher's slaughtered beasts.

How much unavenged blood we spilled,

With none to seek revenge for it!

O journey that stood in for all journeys,

And excursion through which my glory was fulfilled,

    Blessed in arrival and departure!

On it I fulfilled my desires in shooting,

And surpassed the onlookers through skill.

On it I broke my pledge of protection to the birds,

Though their home is near my home,

And I used not to violate a neighbor's right.

You lodged them in death and ruin,

Contrary to the custom of visitors.

No eyes of bowstrings wept for them,

Nor did the sanctity of neighborliness protect them.

And I returned, my fortune high, my beacon raised,

    With prosperity's and good fortune's fire-stick kindled.
