إِصبِرbe patient لِدَهرٍwith a time قَدindeed نابَhas brought affliction وَاِرتَقِبِand wait
إِصبِر لِدَهرٍ قَد نابَ وَاِرتَقِبِ
كَمhow much فيin مَطاويthe folds of الأَيّامِthe days مِنof عَجَبِwonder
كَم في مَطاوي الأَيّامِ مِن عَجَبِ
Be patient with a time that has brought affliction, and wait;
How many wonders lie within the folds of days!
كَمhow many a شِدَّةٍhardship أَيَّسَتكَmade you despair مِنof فَرَحٍjoy
كَم شِدَّةٍ أَيَّسَتكَ مِن فَرَحٍ
يَعقُبُهاfollows it وَالرَخاءُwhile ease عَنfrom كَثَبِnearness
يَعقُبُها وَالرَخاءُ عَن كَثَبِ
How many a hardship has made you despair of joy
that follows it, though ease is close at hand!
فالقَso face بِهَزلٍwith jest جَدَّthe seriousness of الأُمورِaffairs وَلاand do not
فالقَ بِهَزلٍ جَدَّ الأُمورِ وَلا
تَحفَلbe concerned بِكَرِّabout the recurring assaults of الأَحداثِadversities وَالنَوبِand calamities
تَحفَل بِكَرِّ الأَحداثِ وَالنَوبِ
So face the gravity of affairs with jest, and do not
heed the recurring assaults of adversities and calamities.
فَرُبَّماfor perhaps كانَتِmay be السَلامَةُsafety مُسfirst fragment of 'gained'
فَرُبَّما كانَتِ السَلامَةُ مُس
تَفادَةًremaining fragment of 'gained' مِنfrom مَظِنَّةِa likely source of التَعَبِhardship
تَفادَةً مِن مَظِنَّةِ التَعَبِ
For safety may sometimes be
gained from where hardship is expected.
