Are you content, O people of Baghdad,
Do you consent, O people of Baghdad
to whom tales of generosity are traced,
That the talk of glory is attributed to me
بِأَنّيthat I أَرحَلُleave عَنfrom أَرضِكُمyour land
أَجوبُI roam البِلادَthe lands وَأَستَرفِدُand I seek aid
that I should leave your land,
While I travel from your land
roaming the countries and seeking aid?
Roaming the countries and gaining knowledge
أَلاis there not رَجُلٌa man مِنكُمamong you واحِدٌone
يُحَرِّكُهُstirs him المَجدُglory وَالسودَدُand noble standing
Is there not one man among you
Is there not one man among you
whom glory and noble standing stir,
Moved by glory and eminence
يُقَلِّدُنيinvests me with مِنَّةًa favor يَستَرِقُّtakes captive

بِهاthrough it حُرَّfree-born شُكريmy gratitude وَيَستعبِدُand enslaves
who garlands me with a favor, taking captive
To grant me a favor by which
through it my free-born gratitude and enslaving it,
My gratitude is bound and enslaved?
وَيَغضَبُand grows angry ليfor me غَضبَةًa fit of anger مُرّةًbitter

and burns with bitter anger on my behalf,
And be furiously angry on my behalf
turning the wrongdoer into one who sets things right?
With which the corrupt is reformed by the righteous
لَقَدindeed شانَنيhas marred me أَدَبيmy literary learning بَينَكُمamong you
كَماas شينَwas marred بِاللِحيَةِby a beard الأَمرَدُthe beardless youth
My literary learning has indeed marred me among you,
Indeed, my literature has honored me among you
as a beardless youth is marred by a beard.
As the beard honors the emeralds
أَماis there nothing ليfor me مِنكُمfrom you سِوىexcept شِعرُهُhis poetry
رَقيقٌdelicate وَخاطِرُهُand his imagination جَيِّدُgood
Have I nothing from you but: 'His poetry
Is there anyone among you but for his poetry
is delicate, and his imagination is good'?
Gentle and his mind excellent
يَسُرُّكُمُpleases you أَنthat يُغَنّىit is sung
بِهِof it وَيُطرِبُكُمand delights you أَنَّهُthat it يُنشَدُis recited
It pleases you to hear singing
You are pleased for him to be sung about
of it, and delights you to hear it recited.
And delighted that he recites
وَأُقسِمُand I swear أَنَّthat رَغيفاًa loaf لَدَيَّin my possession

مِنinstead of قَولِكُمُyour saying هَيِّداًencore! جَيِّدُgood
And I swear that a loaf, to me,
I swear a loaf for me
is better than your cries of 'Encore!'
From your words, swaying, excellent
أَرىI see البَحرَthe sea مُعتَرِضاًintervening دونَكُمbefore you
وَماand not ليfor me عَلىon سيفِهِits shore مَورِدُa watering-place
I see the sea barring my way to you,
I see the sea blocking you
yet on its shore I have no place to draw water.
And I have no way to cross his sword
وَيَبعَدُand recedes خَيرُكُمُyour bounty إِنif دَنَوتُI draw near
عَنّيfrom me وَالشَرُّand harm لاdoes not يَبعَدُrecede
And if I draw near, your bounty moves far
The best of you distance themselves if I come near
from me, while harm does not move far.
And the worst do not distance
وَأَشهَدُand I am present فيamid الرَوعِterror يَومَthe day of اللِقاءِbattle
وَإِنand if قُسِمَis divided الفَيءُthe spoils لاnot أَشهَدُI am present
I am present amid terror on the day of battle,
And I witness on the day of encounter
but when the spoils are divided, I am not present.
Even if the spoils are divided, I do not witness
وَأَغرُسُand I plant مَدحيmy praise فَلاbut do not أَجتَنيI gather fruit
وَأَزرَعُand I sow شُكريmy gratitude وَلاand do not أَحصُدُI reap
I plant my praise, but gather no fruit;
I plant my praise but do not harvest it
I sow my gratitude, but reap no harvest.
I sow my gratitude but do not reap it
أَبيعُI sell ثَنائيmy praise وَكُتبيand my books وَلاand does not يَمُدُّextend
إِلَيَّtoward me بِرِفدٍwith a gift يَدُa hand
I sell my praise and my books, yet no hand is stretched
I sell my poems and books but no hand
toward me with a gift.
Reaches out to me with provision
وَيوسِعنيand lavishes on me الدَهرُtime ظُلماًinjustice وَلاand not
أُعانُI am helped عَليهِagainst it وَلاand not أُنجَدُI am aided
Time heaps injustice upon me, and I am not
Time treats me unjustly with its turns
aided against it, nor given help.
As if its events were icy
زَمانٌan age يُحَنِّقُنيangers me صَرفُهُits vicissitudes
كَأَنَّas though حَوادِثَهُits calamities مِبرَدُa rasp
An age whose turns enrage me,
Does no generous man among you become alert for me
as though its calamities were a rasp.
To assist me in it or make me happy?
أَماwill not يَنتَبِهtake notice ليof me مِنكُمamong you كَريمٌa generous man
فَيُسعِفَنيso he aids me فيهِin it أَوor يُسعِدُlends support
Will no generous man among you heed me,
I will wait patiently
and come to my aid in it, or support me?
Perhaps its results will be praised
سَأَحتَقِبُI shall pack along الصَبرَpatience مُستَأنِياًbiding my time
لَعَلَّperhaps عَواقِبَهُits outcomes تُحمَدُwill be praised
I shall carry patience in my saddlebag, biding my time,
And if the market of my praise to you is shut down
perhaps its outcomes will be praised.
The market of books does not shut down
وَإِنand if كَسُدَتstagnates سوقُthe market for مَدحيmy praise لَكُمof you
فَسوقُthen the market for الدَفاتِرِbooks لاdoes not تَكسُدُstagnate
And if the market for my praise of you stagnates,
And I will leave you for a city
the market for books does not stagnate.
In which, in adversities, there is one who provides
وَأَرحَلُand I depart عَنكُمfrom you إِلىto بَلدَةٍa town
بِهاthere فيin الشَدائِدِadversities مَنsomeone who يَرفِدُoffers aid
And I shall leave you for a town
I will settle in its place among its people
where someone offers help in adversity.
With virtue in it, not denied
أَحِلُّI take up مَحَلّيmy place مِنamong أَهلِهاits people
بِفَضلٍthrough merit فيهاthere وَلاand not يُجحَدُis denied
I shall take my place among its people,
To a city where troubles do not stand
through merit that is not denied there.
With the free man in it, nor sit
إِلىto بَلدَةٍa town لاdoes not تَقومُraise up الخُطوبُcalamities
بِالحُرِّthe freeborn man فيهاthere وَلاand does not تَقعَدُbring down
To a town where calamities neither raise
The water of generosity in it does not become bitter
the freeborn man there nor cast him down.
The wind of noble deeds does not still
فَماءُfor the water of السَماحِgenerosity بِهاthere لاdoes not يَغيضُdwindle
وَريحُand the wind of المَكارِمِnoble deeds لاdoes not تَركُدُfall still
For there the water of generosity never dwindles,
Neither do starving lions die in it
and the wind of noble deeds never falls still.
Nor dogs become aggressive
وَلاand not الأَسَدُthe lion الوَردُtawny فيهاthere يَموتُdies
جوعاًof hunger وَلاand not الكَلبُthe dog يَستَأسِدُacts like a lion
Nor does the tawny lion there die
Its days make peace with its people
of hunger, nor does the dog act the lion.
So the sword of troubles in it is sheathed
يُسالِمُis at peace with أَيّامُهاits days أَهلَهاits people
فَسَيفُso the sword of الخُطوبِcalamities بِهاthere مُغمَدُsheathed
Its days are at peace with its people,
May God protect Baghdad from an abode
so there the sword of calamities is sheathed.
In which every noble act is missed
لَحىmay curse اللَهُGod بِغَداذَBaghdad مِنas مَوطِنٍa dwelling-place
بِهِin it كُلُّevery مَكرُمَةٍnoble trait تُفقَدُis lost
May God curse Baghdad—a dwelling-place
This is the house - neither is my living in it
in which every noble trait is lost.
Shady, nor is my time in it wasted
هِيَit الدارُthe dwelling لاnot ظِلُّthe shade of عَيشيmy life بِهاthere
ظَليلٌsheltering وَلاand not زَمَنيmy time أَغيدُsoft and easy
It is the dwelling where my life's shade is not
The breeze of passions in it is cool
sheltering, nor are my days gentle.
And the market of poetry in it is cooler
نَسيمُthe breeze of الهَوِيِّthe air بِهاthere بارِدٌcold
وَسوقُand the market for القَريضِpoetry بِهاthere أَبرَدُcolder
The breeze of the air there is cold,
And the morals of its inhabitants are like fresh water
and the market for poetry there is colder.
But their hands are frozen
وَأَخلاقُand the manners of سُكّانِهاits inhabitants كَالزُلالِlike clear water
وَلَكِنَّand yet أَيديهِمُtheir hands جَلمَدُhard stone
Its inhabitants' manners are like clear water,
So the palms of cultured men are clenched
but their hands are hard stone.
And the face of humanity is cold
فَكَفُّso the hand of العَوارِفُbenefactions مَقبوضَةُclenched البَنانِthe fingers
وَوَجهُand the face of النَدىgenerosity أَربَدُdusky
So the hand of beneficence has its fingers clenched,
The clouds of noble deeds do not drizzle
and the face of generosity is darkened.
And the fire of injustices is not extinguished
وَسُحبُand the clouds of المَكارِمِnoble deeds لاdo not تَستَهِلُّshed rain
وَنارُand the fire of المَظالِمِinjustices لاdoes not تَخمَدُdie down
The clouds of noble deeds do not shed rain,
Every day in it the lower class is seen
and the fire of injustices never dies down.
In charge but not suitable for it
يُرىis seen كُلَّevery يَومٍday بِهاthere سِفلَةٌa base fellow
يَسودُbecomes a lord وَلَمَand did not يَنمِهِnurture him سودَدُnobility
Every day there a base fellow is seen
He struggles without his origin and kin supporting him
rising to lordship, though no nobility nurtured him.
And he is abandoned by family and allies
يُناضِلُfights in defense مِنon دونِهِhis behalf وَفرُهُhis wealth
وَيَخذُلُهُand fails him الأَصلُancestry وَالمَحتِدُand lineage
His wealth fights on his behalf,
He admires the scent of his clothes
while his ancestry and lineage fail him.
While his origin and birth are wicked
وَيُعجِبُهُand pleases him طيبُthe fineness of أَثوابِهِhis clothes
وَقَدand indeed خَبُثَis foul الأَصلُancestry وَالمَولِدُand birth
The fineness of his clothes delights him,
His actions rival kings
though his ancestry and birth are foul.
While his fathers’ baseness testifies against him
يُباريvies with المُلوكَkings وَأَفعالُهُand his deeds
بِخِسَّةِto the baseness of آبائِهِhis fathers تَشهَدُbear witness
He vies with kings, yet his deeds
He focuses on whitening his clothes
bear witness to the baseness of his fathers.
While the face of time because of him is blackened
وَيَعنىand takes care بِمُبيَضٍّover the whiteness of أَثوابِهِhis clothes
وَوَجهُand the face of الزَمانِtime بِهِbecause of him أَسوَدُblack
And he takes pains over his clothes' whiteness,
And while you see him in a condition
while the face of time is blackened by him.
That the envious admire his gentleness
فَبَيناso while تَراهُyou see him عَلىin حالَةٍa condition
يَرِقُّfeel pity لِرِقَّتِهاfor its wretchedness الحُسَّدُthe envious
So, one moment you see him in a condition
Until you see him appointed
whose wretchedness moves even the envious to pity;
With the inkwell behind him and the desk in front
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَراهُyou see him وَقَدand already أَمَّهُstood before him
الدَواةُthe inkwell وَمِنand from خَلفِهِbehind him المُسنَدُthe backrest
then you see him with, set before him,
I settled in it unwillingly, not settling
an inkwell, and behind him a backrest.
When people settle and I do not contract
حَلَلتُI settled بِهاthere كارِهاًunwillingly لاnot أَحُلُّI loosen
إِذاwhen الناسُpeople حَلّواloosen وَلاand not أَعقُدُI bind
I settled there unwillingly; I cannot loosen
As the black stone settled in the grasp
when others loosen, nor can I bind.
Of the Qarmatian, may his greetings be stoned
كَماas حَلَّsettled فيin قَبضَةِthe grasp of القَرمَطِيِّthe Qarmatian
تَحيّاتِهِhis greetings الحَجَرُthe Stone اّلأَسوَدُBlack
As there lodged in the Qarmatian's grasp
It is as if when I resided
the Black Stone—[the phrase 'his greetings' is unclear here].
In its outskirts for some time, seated,
كَأَنّيas though I لَمّاwhen لَزِمتُI kept to الجُلوسَsitting
بِأَكنافِهاin its quarters زَمِنٌchronically disabled مُقعَدُparalyzed
As though, having kept to sitting
The affliction grew long against one humiliated
in its quarters, I were crippled and paralyzed.
And the likes of me does not sleep on injustice
يَطولُdrags on المَطالُdelay in payment عَلىamid ذِلَّةٍhumiliation
وَمِثليand one like me عَلىunder الضَيمِoppression لاdoes not يَرقُدُsleep
Delay over payment drags on in humiliation,
I have no resolve to rise up
and a man like me does not sleep under oppression.
With which my blanket at night would be folded
وَلاand not ليfor me لِلعَزمِfor resolve مِنany نَهضَةٍsetting-forth
يَكونُwould be سَميريmy night companion بِهاon it الفَرقَدُFarqad
Nor is a resolute setting-forth mine,
The envious bite their palms because of it
on which Farqad would be my companion by night,
And the likes of me are envied for the like of it
يَعَضُّbites الحَسودُthe envious man بِهاover it كَفَّهُhis hand
وَمِثليand one like me عَلىfor مِثلِهاits like يُحسَدُis envied
over which the envious man would bite his hand—
and a man like me is envied for such a thing.
