وَقالواAnd they said الغِنىwealth عَرَضٌa target لِلخُطوبِfor calamities
وَقالوا الغِنى عَرَضٌ لِلخُطوبِ
فَكَيفَThen how تَعَرَّضَhas it presented itself لِلمُعدِمِto the penniless
فَكَيفَ تَعَرَّضَ لِلمُعدِمِ
And they said, “Wealth is a target for calamities.”
Then how has calamity come upon the penniless?
وَقالواAnd they said السَلامَةُsafety تَحتَbeneath الخُمولِobscurity
وَقالوا السَلامَةُ تَحتَ الخُمولِ
فَماThen why ليfor me خَمِلتُI fell into obscurity وَلَمand did not أَسلَمِI escape harm
فَما لي خَمِلتُ وَلَم أَسلَمِ
And they said, “Safety lies beneath obscurity.”
Then why have I fallen into obscurity yet not escaped harm?
