Spring's cheek blushed rose-red with modesty,

in shame at the dew bestowed upon it.

And the violet of the dunes bowed its head

when it saw the beloved's sidelock curl.

And I see autumn has inhaled winter's breath,

so it turned yellow in fear of it when it appeared.

And it saw the armies of winter's torrents advancing,

and, clad in a robe of fine silk, stripped itself bare.

And the clouds scatter pearls, and its branches

with palms of leaves distribute gold.

And darkness lined the star with antimony kohl,

since it took it for an inflamed eye in the sky.

A garden smiled upon the visitors with a smiling mouth

of the garden, sweet in its harvest and bounty.

None there tasted sleeplessness except an eye

of the tender, alluring narcissus, which stayed awake.
