رعَى اللّهُ عَوَّاداً إذا زار نادياً

غَدا لِجُموحِ اللَّهْوِ في الحالِ رَائِضَا

غَدا لِجُموحِ اللَّهْوِ في الحالِ رَائِضَا

May God protect an oud player: whenever he visits a gathering,

he at once becomes a tamer of unbridled revelry.

رأى طَرَبَ النَّدْمانِ أسْقَمه الهوَى

فَجَسَّ له نَبْضاً من العُودِ نابِضَا

He saw the drinking companion’s rapture sickened by love,

so he felt for it a pulse throbbing from the oud.
