دهرُ سُوءٍ فيه ارْتفاعُ لَئيمٍ

دهرُ سُوءٍ فيه ارْتفاعُ لَئيمٍ

وبَنانٌ من المَكارِمِ تُنْفَضْ

وبَنانٌ من المَكارِمِ تُنْفَضْ

An evil age, in which a base man rises,

An era of evil in which a villain rises

and fingers are shaken free of noble deeds;

And branches of virtues are shaken off.

فَيَدِي قد غَسلْتُها من نَداهُ

فَيَدِي قد غَسلْتُها من نَداهُ

وفمُ الجَفْنِ بالدُّمُوعِ تَمَضْمَضْ

وفمُ الجَفْنِ بالدُّمُوعِ تَمَضْمَضْ

so I have washed my hand of its bounty,

So I have washed my hands of his dew,

and the eyelid’s mouth has rinsed itself with tears.

And the mouth of my eyelids I rinse with tears.
