O Eid, O Eid of sorrows, O Eid!

O Eid, I wish my eyes would never see you.

    وَعالحول عُدنا بِناحية قسطموني

    Last year we spent Eid in weeping and woes;

A year later, we spent it in the district of Kastamonu.

And the year after that—see where our meetings will be.

If your Lord wills, hardships become easy.

I feel within my heart the crashing of thunder.

Every moment my rainclouds pour down upon my cheek.

Within me lie every affliction and burning torment,

From the tyranny of days that made us drink bitter wrongs.

O God, You who created servant and master,

O You whose will lies between kaf and nun,

O Creator of the world, its downward slopes and rising heights,

By Your command its celestial sphere and ships run their course.

Free us from the land of the Turks; I long

For my eyes to behold the people of noble deeds,

The people of the homesteads where my dearest wishes lie.

Among them, Zuhayri ghee is poured lavishly.

What a shame! The eyes of the envious struck them.

Even now, no one has told me for certain what became of them.

They went in scattered bands across the kingdoms, isolated from one another.

Every land has companions who remember me.

And those in Tunis, carrying rifles,

    Train every day before sunrise.

My yearning for them is that of she-camels bereft of their newborn calves,

Lowing mournfully over the hides of their young.

They made people's eyes weep, in former days and anew,

And bequeathed me burning sorrows in the mountain's heart.

Every moment I long to see them at the appointed meetings.

Even if they stay away long, I do not expect them to slight me.

The fires of my heart grow with repeated kindling.

My wounds are deep within me; they bewilder me.

The healer could not soothe it with dressings.

Then it bled, and through it my eyes were opened.

My sorrow has grown; neither islands nor mountain ridges can bear it.

If I stay away long, you are bound to miss me.

If I die, O readers of poems,

Do not bury me outside the land of al-Sham.

I close my words by invoking the noble Hashemite Prophet,

And his companions—may they rescue me from this affliction.
