How often a heart has feared and trembled in this world!

And how often an eye has been veiled by its streaming tears!

Its accumulating injustices have overwhelmed my patience.

So I call upon God, my Creator, for relief from its torrent.

My ailment is my delirium, and the glances are my own.

And in thought there is no rest from it, nor for it.

At times it whispers to me to soothe my mind,

And at times there is no solace from it, nor for it.

    سطرتها باك بدمع محالها

    I wrote my words with tears from my eye;

Weeping, I wrote them with tears in their stead.

I quiet passion's frenzies deep within me,

Then the surges of my breast rise from their resting places.

When I saw the Bey lying on his back,

And recall the qualities of his ways in all their perfection:

Bound by death's ropes, its fallen victim—

Alas that majesty should wither in its prime!

Alas, after the medals and the banner—

Their favor once rested upon that countenance.

Alas, after lofty buildings and their construction,

Today he lies in a grave facing them.

Alas, the [lion's] cub lies upon the earth!

The clan's pride now lies in a grave before it.

Alas, the lion's cub lies upon the earth!

The clan's strength whenever its burden was too hard to lift.

No plight but he could change it through resolve,

And no hardship but he swiftly went to meet it.

    The reins of all affairs were in his hands;

If he wished, he set them straight; if he wished, he bent them.

Yet after that glory, the grave enfolds him.

Damn the world, and the disappointment of its hopes!

Come, maidens of the camp, chant and lament

For the coming of parting, which showed it no pity [wording uncertain].

As for me, if my eye has not wept for it and I have not mourned it—

None present but wept and lamented it.

O visitors to the house, as soon as you arrive,

O loving friends, ask the house what ails it.

If only Shibli could be met within its grounds,

Even if ransoming him meant all its wealth was gone!

And he who built and honored it had never left it!

No distress arose but he appeared and rallied to meet it.

O master of high honor, its father and grandfather,

You are its close kinsman, and you its maternal uncle.

He was never absent from it, roaming it from dawn,

From its east to its west, to its north.

Lordly, swaying in pleasure and serenity,

He strode with a swaying gait, to its right and left.

And today the memory lives on of him who departed and journeyed

To the All-Merciful's mercy, to dwell in its shade.

He left the homelands at the Guardian's command,

And withdrew from the world, forsaking its shade.

And today Yahya Bey, with strength of hand and renown,

After Abu Mahmoud, can shoulder its burdens.

Glory to the house of glory, a wall encircling it,

And aid keeps flowing to balance its burdens.

O Abu Hasan, fate's decree rules humankind—

A cup that circles the world and its mighty.

Where are the kings, and where have their armies fled?

Where are the palaces, and where have their canopies gone?

When the Lord of the Throne wills an irrevocable decree,

Who can oppose power in all its majesty?

No distress comes without a deliverer to dispel it,

Nor darkness without the dawning of its splendor.

In a world where we take our places like caravans:

Some make camp, while others' camels have moved on.

    عَلى الحَي مثل الظل يَذهب جمالها

    It shows its sweetness and makes us drink its bitterness;

For the living, its beauty vanishes like a shadow.
