    Hoping for relief from the Creator of earth and heaven.

    Perhaps He will gather us in the abode of peace.

    Perhaps He will gather us and heal our wounds,

    And we will recall the oppressors' past deeds against us.

    O Abu Ajjaj, hear the meanings of my poem.

    I am wronged by what has befallen me.

    وَأَضحيت سكراناً بغير مدام

    Because of what befell me, my sound judgment vanished;

    I became drunk without wine.

    Though it has befallen me and you, all of us,

    My words are nevertheless rightful reproach.

    زرع الندامة ما ينل طعام

    Much reproach does not help the loser;

    The crop of regret yields no food.

    دَعا هيكلي بَعد العَمار هدام

    The crop of regret, O son of Bahsas, has oppressed me;

    It left my frame in ruins after it stood whole.

    If my estrangement lasts, my longing and loneliness last.

    My soul must inevitably stray in longing.

    Inevitably, we must leave my soul's dwelling,

    If separation from the absent ones grows long and endures.

    After what we have written, we invoke blessings upon the Prophet,

    The chosen, the sent one, the full moon.

    May He grant us a good ending and gather us together,

    And free us from the land of the oppressors.
