Eid has returned, and our Eid is sorrow and bitter wrongs.

My tears pour down my cheek on Eid.

For two Eids I have been imprisoned in the land of the Turks.

And on the day of the third Eid, we were again in Sinab.

The people rejoiced, and every enthralled soul was delighted,

Except for me, Husayn, Hilal, and Dhiyab.

And alas for me—through foolishness they entangled us.

Nor do they know us, far from home in the land of the Turks.

My sorrow overflows; a hundred galleons could not carry it.

The burning within me has grayed the hair on my head and cheeks.

O God, whom every sorrowful soul seeks,

O rescuer, sought by every seeker,

You whose mercy all creatures always hope for,

O my conqueror, vast in bounty and wide of door,

O you whose will joins kaf and nun,

O Living One, lavish giver of great gifts,

O raiser of the celestial spheres, O unfolder of the universe,

O you who hold the world steady upon four gates,

Have mercy on the weak, sunk in the depths,

By the standing of the chosen Prophet and the four spiritual poles.

Free us from prisons after despair,

And reveal our good fortune after our star has set.

By the honor of the Sanctuary, the House, and those who visit,

And the Chosen One, sent to humankind with a Book.

After this, O rider of a noble, fine-built camel,

From the stock of our riding camels, it covers the circuit.

    Pale-coated, Sharari-bred, high-backed and dependable,

It resembles a male ostrich, startled when it sees a figure.

Cast the saddle onto it, over its back,

And tighten the girth of the wind-swift, skittish riding camel.

And outfit it with costly silk cloth,

With trailing feather tassels on its four sides.

And a saddlebag of splendid color, braided and wool-trimmed,

Al-Hawi's handiwork, carrying dates and provisions.

O Abu Rashid, drive it onward, and beware of slackness.

May you be fortunate, keeping firmly to the road.

At dawn, set out from Sinab with help.

Keep it close to the wall; do not head for the gate.

Head east, toward the road they speak of.

Keep your right hand always tugging the rope.

Southward, you must pass through Samsun.

After four days, you will reach Jarum, by my reckoning.

Your host is a shaykh, keen-edged and honed,

The lion, Ibn Nassar, ever winning honor through goodness.

A noble man whose feast resounds whenever guests arrive,

Serving his guest, rejoicing in visitors.

These are my words; scrutinize the jim and the nun.

What lies in my heart has become a secret running loose in my head.

They feel no shame, even if their lineage is called disgraceful.

Whoever trusts a scoundrel, O paragon, is mad.

But my words are blame, folly, and reproach.

Oh, a thousand laments for men of rank left to waste away,

In a land whose inhabitants are hyenas and dogs.

Miserly—beware! They cheat with their talk.

Among them, it is shameful to bring up generosity.

To them, O foremost chief, we have become, in truth,

Like bars, watched by a hundred guards and gatekeepers.

The noble falcon, when caught by the net, is wronged.

Through treachery they caught us, without feathers or a crow.

Gracious patience: every affliction has its aid.

None but the Lord of the Throne opens a door for us.

But our hope in Zayd and Amr is false.

How many passengers have gone aboard the steamer of misery!

By the Chosen One, full moon of the darkness, pure of hue,

I end my words, and in this address I ask forgiveness.
