So I look upon the sublime sanctuary and its dweller,
and rain tears upon the earth, outdoing the clouds,
And the land weeps, below it the clouds.

kissing the dust fulfill even part of what is due?
Kissing the earth fulfill even some of what is owed?

if religious law and decorum had not forbidden it.
If propriety and virtue had not banned him from it.
