O master, whose speech yields pearls,

who has taken the full moon’s place in his firmament:

ما قولكم في فاسق مفسد

ما قولكم في فاسق مفسد

لم ينهه الشارع عن فسقه

لم ينهه الشارع عن فسقه

what do you say of a sinner, a corrupter,

whom the Lawgiver has not forbidden to sin?

يأكل مال الناس غصبا ولا

يأكل مال الناس غصبا ولا

إثم ولا تحريم في رزقه

إثم ولا تحريم في رزقه

He devours people’s wealth by force, yet there is no

sin or prohibition in his sustenance.

وهو على إفساده متق

وهو على إفساده متق

ملازم والخوف من خلقه

ملازم والخوف من خلقه

And despite his destructiveness, he is pious,

steadfast, and fear is among his traits.

فأعمل الفكرة في حلّه

فأعمل الفكرة في حلّه

لتوصل المعنى إلى حقّه

لتوصل المعنى إلى حقّه

So set your mind to solving it,

so that you may give the meaning its due.
