وَقَدْ أهَضْتَ جَنَاحَ المَجْد فَاتَّئِدِ
You struck the oryx's eye, O Death, with ophthalmia.
My eye has been struck with blindness, oh Death, with cataracts,
And you have broken glory's wing, so go gently.
And you have folded the wing of glory, so take rest.
جَدَعْتَyou severed مَارِنِيَthe soft tip of my nose الأقْنَىaquiline وَعنand with غَرَضintent

رميتَ جفنِيَ بَعْدَ المَوْتِ بِالسَّهَدِ
You severed the tip of my aquiline nose, and deliberately
You have lopped off the lofty branches, and for no reason
you afflicted my eyelid with sleeplessness after death.
Cast my eyelid, after death, into oblivion.
هَدَمْتَyou demolished مَاwhat شِيدَwas built منْof رُكْنِthe pillar of الفخارpride ولمand did not

You demolished what was built of pride's pillar, and
You have demolished what was built up as pillars of pottery, and left
left nothing visible of it, forevermore.
No ruins for it, no remnants, unto eternity.

إذْ لاَ تُسَلِّمهَا إلاَّ يَداً بيدِ
You promptly settled the exchange of lifespans drawing near,
You bargained, in the drawing of lives that had drawn nigh,
for you surrender them only hand to hand.
Since you would deliver them only hand in hand.

How much, by diminishing greatness, you increased the anguish of a liver
How you increased in your loss the burning agony of my heart—
burning hot! Would that you had neither diminished nor increased.
It blazed, and oh, would that you had not diminished and not increased!

And how many springs you left where none shall dwell
save the kite, the swallow, and the shrike.
Save the wolves, and owls, and chirping crickets.

And how many branches you cut in jealousy, so they withered,
And how many branches you severed through jealousy, till they withered
as though your heart were fashioned for envy.
As if you were a heart naturally prone to envy.

And how many allies of generosity you took, and how often
And how you took as fellow traveler generosity, while you
you left generosity's forearm a hand without an upper arm.
Left the dew’s bough without even a single prop.

And how you left a father weeping for a son
making them taste a mother's bereavement for her child.
Whose taste of separation’s bitterness you made him taste.

And how many smoothed graves over which you scattered
beautiful limbs, like jewels arranged in rows.
Limbs of beauty, like precious pearls.

And you made them pillows without necks
as you clothed yourself in them, a robe without a body.
Just as you clothed them in gowns without bodies.

And how many trustworthy men you left no longer trusted,
And how you left behind trustees untrustworthy
as you left a pillar no longer relied upon.
Just as you left pillars without firm support.

And how often you ascended a height hard to attain,
And how you climbed by steps too high to be attained,
and how often you penetrated even the lions' thicket.
And crept even into the lions' den.

O you clothed in fresh youth, intoxicated
O you who don the garb of youth still green and unripe,
from its cup—has anyone of sound judgment loved drunkenness?
Has the sober one ever loved the wine from his cup?
لاَdo not تَغْتَرِرْbe deceived بِشَبَابٍby youth أنْتَyou تَهْدِمُهُare destroying it

Do not be deceived by youth that you yourself are destroying;
Do not be fooled by a youth that you demolish—
death indeed spares no one.
Death leaves no one alive eternally.

And you, brother of gray hair, why do you not restrain yourself from
And O my brother white of hair, why do you not forbid yourself
the corruption you have committed, beyond all counting?
From the corruption that is far too manifest to be numbered?

Grant that youth affords its possessor an excuse:
Grant the youth his excuse along with his companion—
what excuse has a gray-haired man alone in disobedience?
What excuse is there for the gray-haired in solitary disobedience?

Never suppose that happiness lasts forever.
Do not ever suppose gladness will be eternal, everlasting,
Whoever today delights, tomorrow's gloom will visit.
If today it delighted you, tomorrow it will beset you with gloom.

Life is a racecourse, and death its finish;
For life is an arena of contention, and death the finishing line,
and every runner will meet the end of the allotted span.
And every companion shall meet his appointed term.

O night, amid the lightning's tumult, there hung
O night of lightning flickering, your walnuts have clung
your al-Jawza, as the heart is bound to the liver.
Together, as the heart clings to the liver.

You showed unrest like that which you left behind,
You have perpetuated the same disquiet that fled from you,
but it was not like the grief you had concealed.
And there was no stillness in what you harbored of silence.

And how often I forced myself to endure, until no endurance remained;
How much have I had patience until the patient one wearied,
now I strive until there is no room for striving.
And now I strive until the diligent one is exhausted.

I bear mingled sorrows that, were I to cast them
With me are motes of sorrow—had I cast them
in lamentation upon the heads of rainclouds, they would yield no rain.
In my lament, the rain clouds would have found no place.

And an anguish my tears watered, setting it ablaze;
And a regret my tears brought forth and ignited—
had it assailed the star with its anguish, the star would not have blazed.
Had it returned to its valleys the stars would not have guided.

By my life, the calamity that came knocking has overwhelmed us,
My life—grievous calamity has befallen me
borne by the nights; the ordeal is beyond endurance.
With which the nights have been covered, and grave sorrows upon sorrows.

These are the decrees—so accept what your fate
whether a flourishing future or a troubled present.
Has brought you, of fresh and fertile, or barren and adverse.

For the command of things has appointed times,
whether reversing their course or proceeding steadily.
Between those of them that alternate and those that persist.

If my longing grows relentless, it should surprise no one;
If my longing retreats, then no wonder for one astonished,
or if my patience dwindles, there is no blame for one in distress.
Or my patience wanes, then no blame on one vexed.

An eye with lids weighed down by sleeplessness—
the beloved's distance; and a hollow [unclear reading], wasted in body.
The absence of the beloved and declining health have burdened it.

When I resort to patience in it, I find none.

Cast by ill-omened fortune into eclipse.

For Muhammad, when he turned away and did not return.

And every heart aflame with the fire of passion.

I do not reproach Time, which carried off its master;
I do not blame time which has terminally illed its master—
the grief that settled in its entrails is enough for it.
What has settled into its bowels is enough burning agony for it.

From death, but they did not, and were not able.

Ah, for an explanatory apposition in him, joined in sequence,
Alas for the charm of eloquence wherein one of graceful gait
where nearness contended with the governing force of distance.
Nearness has contested with the agent of remoteness.

Would that, my son, you were not created for my misery—
O would that I had not been subjected to bitter aloes instead of honey!
Oh would that I had not been named as patient toward ardour!

And your sun had not shone upon any land.

Would that I had been stopped in observing the motions of the stars!

one in whom anguish stirred dormant fortitude.
