They were veiled from sight—what tears were not shed
They departed, so what tears were not shed
in grief, and what ribs were not scorched?
In sorrow, and what ribs were not burnt
وَتَرَحَّلَتْand departed عَنْهُمْfrom them رَكَاِئِبُنَاour riding-camels فَهَلْso can

Our riding-camels departed from them—can
And our litters moved on from them. Is it possible
I meet them again, now that our meeting-place is far away?
For me to meet you again after the far separation?
غَرُبَتْset شُمُوسُهُمُtheir suns وَغَابَand vanished شُعَاعُهَاtheir radiance

Their suns set, and their radiance vanished
Their suns have set, and their rays disappeared
yesterday from my sight, as though they had never risen.
Yesterday from my eyes, as if they never rose
لَوْif ُكُنْتَyou were شَاهِدَنَاour witness وَمَاand what فَعَلَdid الهَوَىlove

Had you witnessed us and what love did
If you had witnessed what passion did
to our hearts, you would have envied those who never loved.
To our hearts, you would have envied those who never loved
وَرَحِمْتَand you would have pitied صَبَّاa lovesick man قَدْalready بَكَىwept لِبُكَائِهِat his weeping

And you would have pitied a lovesick man, at whose weeping
And you would have pitied Saba when he wept, for his tears
the cloud's eyelid wept with its streaming tears.
Made the eyelids of the clouds flow with pouring rain
غَفَلَgrew heedless الرَّقِيبُthe watcher وَسَاعَدَتْنَاand helped us خلوَةٌseclusion

The watcher grew heedless, and seclusion helped us
The watcher was absent, and we were afforded intimacy
pour out passion and arouse longing.
In expressing passion, yearning, and growing attachment
فَتَصَعَّدَتْso rose زَفَرَاتُهَاher sighs ثُمَّthen انْبَرَتْshe began

So her sighs rose, and then she began
Her sighs rose up, and then she spoke plainly,
to lament separation with burning longing and devotion.
Complaining of distance with burning and clinging
وَدَّعْتُهَاI bade her farewell والبينُwhile separation أوْدَعَconsigned مُهْجّتِيmy heart

I bade her farewell, and separation consigned my heart
I bade her farewell, and separation lodged agony
to sighs of yearning and searing passion.
In my innermost heart, with burning passion and devotion
ثُمَّthen انْثَنَيْتُI turned away وَمُهْجَتِيand my heart فيin أسْرِهَاher thrall

Then I turned away, my heart in her thrall;
Then I resigned, and my heart was still enthralled by her
love ruled that it had not been set free.
Imprisoned by love, unable to be freed
