    The sidelock swept its night over the cheek,

    And trailed its hem across the sun's face.

    And the charms swayed a bān-tree bough,

    Toward which the heart inclines, and I savor its sway.

    And the Caesar of glances took counsel with my heart,

    Having already drawn the blades and wheeled his steeds.

    فَيَا وَيْلاَهُ إنْ لَمْ أوفِ كَيْلَهْ

    And wasting sickness traded with us, measure for measure;

    So woe to me if I do not repay its measure in full!

    And love for the sash stirred, so my tears flowed,

    And filled the cheek's channels with its torrent.
