مِنْbecause of فَارِغِone carefree at السِّرّheart
I have fallen into anxious thoughts
the cup of flower-scent -
because of one carefree at heart.
I'm distraught

مِنْfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of السُّكْرِdrunkenness
I could not tell what was in the cup,
with my secret heart.
so intense was my drunkenness:
I know not what's in the cup
هَلْwas it بَرْقٌlightning أوْor مِصْبَاحْa lamp
أوْor نُورٌlight أوْor نَوَّارْblossoms
was it lightning, or a lamp,
for sheer drunkenness:
or light, or blossoms,
lightning or lamp,
أوْor ذَهَبٌgold قَدْhas سَاحْmelted

بِالدَّعْجِwith dark eyes وَالْوَطْفِand long lashes
O enchanter of gazelles,
in a crystal cup?
with dark eyes and long lashes,
Temptress, bewitching
وَفَاضِحَand shamer of الأغْصَانْthe branches
بِالتِّيهِwith proud bearing وَالظَّرْفِand grace
and you who shame the branches
in languor and charm,
with proud bearing and grace:
revealing the boughs

يَاO سَاحِرَenchanter of الطَّرْفِthe gaze
sheathe the blades of your eyelids,
in wandering and wit -
O you of the enchanting gaze!
Sheathe your gazelle's glance,
فَلَحْظُكَfor your glance السَّفَّاحْthe blood-shedding
قَدْhas أشْهَرَbrandished البَّتَّارْthe cleaving sword
For your blood-shedding glance
Sorcerer of the eyes!
has brandished the cleaving sword,
For your wanton look

and your radiant hair-parting
has bared its swords,
has eclipsed the moons' radiance.
and your separating smile
يَاO بَدْرُfull moon فِيin خَدّكْyour cheek
لِلشَّمْسِfor the sun مَنْwho أطْلَعْmade rise
O full moon, in your cheek
hid the stars' radiance.
who has made the sun rise?
Full moon in your cheek -

Be kind, and cease your rejection;
did the sun rise there? -
and have mercy, and visit, and listen.

For Ibn al-Khalūf, your servant,

has said in the opening verse:
For Ibn Khaluf, your slave,
شَقِّتْhas torn يَدُthe hand of الإصْبَاحْdaybreak
مِنَfrom الدُّجَىthe darkness الأسْتَارْthe veils
The hand of daybreak has torn
has at daybreak cried:
the veils from the darkness.
The dawn's hand has torn
فَاسْتَعْجِمِso make mute الأقْدَاحْthe cups
وَاسْتَنْطِقِand make speak الأوْتَارْthe strings
So silence the cups,
the curtains of gloom...
and make the strings speak.
