بَكَىwept بِدُمُوعِwith tears of القَطْرِrain جَفْنُthe eyelid of الغَمَائِمِthe clouds
فَمَزَّقَso tore نَحْرُthe breast of الزَّهْرِthe blossoms جَيْبَthe collar of الكَمَائِمِthe bud-sheaths
The eyelid of the clouds wept tears of rain.
The eyelids of the clouds wept with drops of rain
So the blossoms' breast tore the collar of their bud-sheaths.
And tore open the throat of flowers with stakes
وَنَمَّتْand disclosed بِأسْرَارِwith the secrets of الرُّبَىthe hills ألْسُنُthe tongues of الشذَىfragrance
فَأدْمَتْso bloodied خُدُودَthe cheeks of الوَرْدِthe roses أيْدِيthe hands of النّسائمِthe breezes
And the tongues of fragrance disclosed the hills' secrets.
The tongues of fragrance grew with the secrets of the meadows
So the hands of the breezes bloodied the roses' cheeks.
And dyed the cheeks of roses with the hands of breezes
وَقَامَتْand stood عَلَىupon عُودِa branch of الأرَاكِthe arak tree حَمَائِمٌdoves
تنوحُlamenting عَلَىover قَصْفِthe breaking of الغُصُونِthe boughs النَّوَاعِمِtender
And doves stood upon a branch of the arak tree,
Doves stood on the boughs of trees
Lamenting the breaking of the tender boughs.
Mourning the twigs of delicate branches
وَصَوَّتَand cried out حَادِيthe camel-driver of الرَّعْدِthunder فيin دَجْنِthe gloom of غَيْمِهِits cloud
كَمَاas زَأرَتْroared فِيin الغَابِthe forest صِيدُproud-necked الضَّرَاغِمِthe lions
And thunder's camel-driver cried out in the gloom of its cloud,
The roar of thunder called out in the darkness of its cloud
As proud-necked lions roared in the forest.
As prey roared in the forest, seized by predators
وَعَزَّىand consoled وَميضُthe flash of البرقِlightning ثَكْلاَءَa bereaved one رَوْضةٍa garden
أقَامَset up لَهَاfor it القُمْرِيُّthe turtledove سُوقَa market of المَآتِمِmourning gatherings
And the flash of lightning consoled a bereaved garden,
And the flash of lightning consoled the bereaved garden
For which the turtledove had set up a market of mourning.
As the moonlit one held a funeral for it
وَسَلَّتْand drew يمينُthe right hand of النَّهْرِthe river منfrom غمدِthe scabbard of روضِهَاits garden
لِضَرْبِto strike رِقَابِthe necks of المَحْلِdrought بِيضَgleaming white الصَّوَارِمِkeen swords
And the river's right hand drew from its garden's scabbard
The river’s right hand slipped out of its meadow’s sheath
Gleaming white, keen swords to strike the necks of drought.
To behead the meadow’s heads with the blades of swords
وَهَبَّand stirred نَسِيمُthe breeze of الشَّوْقlonging إذْwhen خلَّفَleft behind السُّرَىnight-travel
مَعَالمَlandmarks كانتhad been قَبْلُbefore بيضَbright الْمَوَاسِمِthe seasons of gathering
And the breeze of longing stirred when night-travel left behind
When the breeze of longing left the encampment
Landmarks whose seasons of gathering had once been bright.
It erased landmarks that were once white seasons
سَرَوْاthey journeyed by night سَحَراًbefore dawn عَنْهَاaway from it فَأقْفَرَso became desolate رَبْعُهَاits abode
وَآنَسَهَاand kept it company سِرْبُa herd of الظِّبَاgazelles وَالنَّعَائِمِand ostriches
They journeyed from it before dawn, so its abode lay desolate,
They bid farewell at dawn and its expanse was deserted
And a herd of gazelles and ostriches kept it company.
Deer and gazelles befriended its empty quarters
وَحَثُّواand urged on مَطَايَاthe mounts of البَيْنِseparation فِيin مَهْمَهthe trackless waste of الفَلاَthe desert
وَسَارُواand travelled بِلَيْلٍthrough a night مِنْfrom دُجَىthe darkness of الصيدthe hunt (unclear in context) فَاحِمِcoal-black
And they urged on separation's mounts through the trackless desert,
They spurred their steeds in the busy confusion of departure
And travelled through a night, coal-black with the darkness of the hunt.
And travelled by night through the darkness of the hunt
فَقَامَتْthen arose وَقَدْwith already زُمَّwere bridled المَطِيُّthe mounts قِيَامَتِيmy day of doom
بِسُوقٍwith a market مِنَof التَّبْرِيحِtorment وَالوجدِand passionate longing قَائِمِin full swing
Then, with the mounts already bridled, my day of doom dawned,
So I stood as the ridden beast stood
With a market of torment and longing in full swing.
In an imminent stance of farewell and fervor
وَلَمْand did not يَبْقَremain مِنْهَاof it إذْwhen نَأىwent far away أهْلُهَاits people سوَىexcept
رُسُومِthe traces of مغَانٍdwellings أقْفَرَتْbecame desolate مِنْof مَغَانِمِbounty
And nothing remained of it, when its people went afar, except
And when its people went far, nothing remained
Traces of dwellings left desolate and bereft of bounty,
Except sketches of encampments, now devoid of spoils
وَتَغْرِيدِand the warbling of قُمْرِيٍّa turtledove وَإيمَاضِand the flashing of بَارِقٍlightning
وَتَصْوِيتِand the sounding of إرْعَادٍthunder ولَفْظِand the utterance of نَوَاسِمِbreezes
And a turtledove's warbling, and the flashing of lightning,
The warbling of a francolin, the glimmer of lightning
And the sounding of thunder, and the utterance of breezes,
The roaring thunder, the hissing of rain
وَنَغْمَةِand the melody of شُحْرُورٍa blackbird وَغُنَّةِand the nasal trill of بُلْبُلٍa bulbul
وَنَعْبَةِand the caw of نَعَّابٍa raven وَأنَّةِand the moan of بَاغِمِa calling gazelle
And a blackbird's melody, and a bulbul's nasal trill,
The song of a bulbul, the tune of a nightingale
And a raven's caw, and a calling gazelle's moan.
The hooting of an owl, the groan of the gloomy sky
