She fastened her buttons over the moons.

And have you not seen where the lights arise?

And she smiled, revealing her saliva's wine, which I took for

hail melted at the lips of blossoms.

And she veiled herself in her veil's cloud—how

splendid the full moon's rising in the hours before dawn!

And the gardens of her cheek breathed fragrance—speak, then,

of the scent within the folds of flower gardens.

And the eyelid of her gaze assailed the lovers.

Have you heard of an eyelid taking the place of a cleaving sword?

And the oryx calves of her gaze looked out from a sorcerer

who enticed the lovesick lover's heart with warnings.

Rosy, with a white wrap, as though she were

a sun revealed in the brightness of day.

Were she not like a bough, there would not stir upon

that figure the nightingales among the birds.

Nay! Nor did the anemone fall in love with her cheek

save that she might reveal a paradise in fire.

Picture her curves and the roses of her cheeks

as a mountain upon which a blaze of sparks gleams.

And marvel at her pupil: it shed my blood, although

the eyelids wore over it a non-Muslim's distinctive garb.

I took Antar, her mole, to court upon her cheek,

and the dispute at its root was over a dinar.

So its Nu'man decreed torment for the heart

when he decreed delight for the eyes.

I did not weep for her; but because of a glance at another,

I purified my eyelids with flowing tears.
