يَاO مُقْلَةَeye of الظَّبْيِthe gazelle وَغُصْنَand bough of النَّقَاthe sand dune
وَمَبْسَمَand smile of الدُّرَthe pearls وَجِيدَand neck of الغَزَالْthe gazelle
O gazelle’s eye and bough of the sand dune,
And smile of pearls and neck of the gazelle!
غَزَوْتَyou raided بِالْعَيْنِwith the eye سُوَيْدَايmy heart’s core إذْwhen
حَسِبْتَyou thought أنْthat مَاnot فِيin السُّوَيْدَاthe heart’s core رِجَالْmen
You raided my heart’s core with your eye, when
You thought there were no men in that core.
وَقُلْتَand you said إذْwhen سَوَّدْتَyou blackened شَعْرَhair of الدُّجَىthe night’s darkness
يَاO سُهْدَsleeplessness of مَنْone who يَهْوَىis in love اللَّيَالِيthe nights الطِّوَالْlong
And you said, when you blackened the hair of night:
“O sleeplessness of one in love through the long nights!”
