يَاO بَدْرَfull moon تَمٍّfullness عَلَىupon قَضِيبٍa slender bough
يَا بَدْرَ تَمٍّ عَلَى قَضِيبٍ
لَمْdid not تَنْظُرِbehold العَيْنُthe eye مِنْهُthan him أجْمَلْmore beautiful
لَمْ تَنْظُرِ العَيْنُ مِنْهُ أجْمَلْ
O full moon, perfected upon a slender bough!
O full moon upon a slender bough,
No eye has ever beheld anyone lovelier than he.
the eye has never beheld anyone more beautiful than him.
قَدْindeed ضَلَّerred مَنْwhoever قَالَsaid عَنْكَof you بَدْرٌa full moon
قَدْ ضَلَّ مَنْ قَالَ عَنْكَ بَدْرٌ
وَأنْتَand you أسْنَىmore exalted عُلًىeminence وَأكْمَلْand more perfect
وَأنْتَ أسْنَى عُلًى وَأكْمَلْ
Truly, whoever called you a full moon has erred—
Whoever called you a full moon has indeed erred,
for you are loftier in splendor and more perfect.
yet you are more exalted in glory and more perfect.
