No—by the coolness of meeting and the heat of parting—

my heart has no healer for separation's sting.

How can the fire of a heart's longing be hidden,

when it has made the eyelid forever awash?

My ribs concealed it, but it was betrayed by

the silent eye-corners, speaking through tears.

O gazelle, fleeing from the lover,

and a meteor, remote and scorching!

How often I call to you: what befell me has harmed me!

How often I call to you: what I endure has wasted me away!

So protect me from the eyelids, for my heart

has died helpless beneath the slender swords.

And rescue me from those figures, for I

    cannot withstand the slender spears.

I accept none but you as master of my bondage.

Do not subject me to the humiliation of being freed.

May God pardon your eyebrows, even as they have

shot me with the arrows of your eyes.

and protect the radiant forehead, lest

the crescents of the horizons lay claim to it.

How many nights of union we spent with him,

    in caresses, delight, and embraces!

And from the faces we unveiled suns,

in the dark nights, intensely radiant.

And from lips we sipped cups

whose wine holds the lovers' repose.

And we bent branches of shapely figures,

with which longing's nightingales exchanged songs,

amid gardens and the roses of a wondrous cheek,

beautifully encircled by the narcissi of eyes.

where union's draught is the sweetest draught,

and parting's flavor is bitter to taste.

    قَدْ قَضَى البَيْنُ بَيْنَنَا بفرَاقِ

    O my heart, bear estrangement patiently;

separation has decreed parting between us.

Do not be distraught when you are afflicted:

after parting comes nothing but reunion.

My father be ransom for him: when his eyes gaze,

the gazelles meet him with lowered heads.

Stingy with union, though he is generous,

    narrow-lidded, broad in character.

    بَدْرُ تَمٍّ وَرِيمُ أنْسِ تَلاَقِ

    A bān-tree branch, and a sand mound—a dune;

a full moon, and a white gazelle of intimate encounter.

He rose, hastening with a sun of wine—may it be ransomed by

my lifeblood, at morning and evening drinking.

For she is wine, and in truth a spirit,

and a marvel born of the decree of a pact of concord.

And she is a virgin, already unveiled in wine-jars

    of pearl, with interlinked neck-rings.

    وَبديعٌ المَاءُ لِلنَّارِ وَاقِ

    And she is fire, and her cup of gold is water;

and how wondrous: water shields fire!

She has bestowed radiance on the drinking companions' lips,

and the bubbles have bestowed on her the cupbearer's lips.
