Never did he draw from the blackness of the eyes

white blades by which killing is lawful,

    but blood flowed from throats,

without a thrust or any wound.

By God, nothing stirred the motionless

except the glances of full-breasted maidens,

when, with each still gaze, they roused

the cleaving blades from their eyelids,

and nocked the arrows of their quivers

    from every eye and brow.

Lissome maidens—when they cry, 'O people of Hajir!'

the raiding squadrons of the fair arrive,

destroying every onlooker with dusky spears,

and baring white blades for combat.

How lovely is what the fine robes reveal

of her, and what the necklines disclose:

    soft, swaying boughs,

    or suns that never set.

    They mock the full moons—

    full-breasted maidens, the hearts' temptation.

They humbled every sorcerer with the magic

    of languid, brazen eyes

that rend the heart and gallbladders

    deep within sound souls.

Oh, many a delicate maiden has unveiled a face

like a full moon upon a slender bough.

Her earring seems to be the Pleiades

    in a bough's ear, above a dune.

In her mouth are honey and strong wine,

and pearls, and musk, and milk.

    إذَا بَدَتْ أبْدَتِ الصَّبَاحْ

    She walks proudly in the deep night of her braids;

when she appears, she reveals the morning,

    and bewitches the radiant stars,

and puts roses and [al-atāḥ: unclear] to shame.

Do you not see the hands of the clouds

watering the flowers' mouths before dawn,

and the eyes of the stars closed

as the eyes of the blossoms were opened,

    and night's black steed, fleeing,

and morning's gray steed in its wake?

As though he were a victor amid the armies,

when his face appeared and shone—

a gallant man who gathered glory and noble deeds,

    and excellence, forbearance, and generosity.

How noble a lord he is, refined,

    preeminent in generosity and dignity!

The lion marveled at his might,

    and the rain borrowed from his bounty;

the full moon veiled itself before his beauty,

and morning drew light from the parting of his hair.

A refuge, risen to the heights of glory,

with blessings whose waters are free to all,

and set apart from the rank of any rival

    by justice, faith, and righteousness.

A lion whose battles in the fray

leave souls at a loss to describe them.

Never did he make the blades thunder in the melee

    but heads fell before him.

He gave his foes deadly poison to drink

with a keen sword, laughing yet grim.

A chieftain—when he draws the cleaving blades,

you see how blood becomes lawful to shed.

He ranges with white blades among the armies,

    as ordained doom ranges.

O Kaaba of glory and the virtues,

O one unique, peerless in beauty,

you were brought beyond the rank of noble deeds

through a subtle meaning whose radiance bears witness.

And of you, O desire of the virtuous,

    your admirer, Ibn al-Khalluf, recited:

Never did he draw from the blackness of the eyes

white blades by which killing is lawful,

    but blood flowed from throats,

without a thrust or any wound.
