My passion has grown earnest, though it wastes the body;
My passion increased as my body weakened,
and through my thoughts love comes alive, though it kills.
And my thoughts revived love though it is deadly.

I have seen none like me preserving love's ways
I have not seen anyone as dutiful to the ways of love as I,
when wavering hearts turn away from it.
When hearts turn away, the gentle ones.

If my eye casts a glance toward anyone but you,
If my eyes glance at another besides you,
the pools of my unceasing tears cleanse it.
The treachery of my tears purifies them.

Your bewitching eye has a wondrous sign of magic,
For your charming gaze, a miracle,
for which the messenger of tears flows upon my cheek.
Upon which the messenger of tears on the cheek flows.

It expresses love's secret, and I let it slip away;
It expresses the secret of passion and I lose it,
by God, how wondrous are eloquent tears as they stream!
So for God, an expressing tear that is zealous.

Has any tear, fertile among tears, ever tasted me,
Has any tear ever rained on me from tears fruitful?
while the abode of my heart's patience lies barren after you?
Patience fills a quarter of the heart after you, barren.

O moon of daybreak, and star
O moon of the dawn and star whose
for whose appearance the full moons yearn,
Rising makes the full moons submit.

If my gaze turns away from you resentfully,
my heart is inhabited through your nearness.
My heart turns affectionately towards you.

I lay awake through darkness until its stars pitied me,
I stayed up late until the stars of night pitied me
and my reproachers softened at what I suffer there.
And the visiting stars commiserated what the blamers caused.

Among my sorrows is that your glance is deadly,
What pained me is that your charming gaze kills
as shown by what my heart now does under its influence.
According to what my heart is doing now.

Do not accuse my passion of delay, for I
So do not accuse the delay of my passion, for I
have achieved what the ancients could not.
Have come with what the predecessors could not achieve.

My two friends, did you behold on the day of Rāma
My friend, have you ever seen a day of determination
slayers for whom the body's vital spots yearned?
When the killers leaned towards it, the warriors?
غدَاةَon the morning when قدودِthe figures of البانthe bān tree سمرٌbrown spears عوَاملٌspear-shafts

That morning, bān-like figures were brown spear-shafts,
The morning of the separation of the beloveds, the visiting dark-haired ones,
and the dark eyes of fair women were deadly bright swords.
And the white of the eyes of the whites, killing whites.
وَفَيِand among النَّاسِpeople جَهْلٌignorance بِالعُيُونِabout eyes إذَاwhen رَنَتْthey gaze

People are ignorant of eyes when they gaze:
There is ignorance among the people about the gazelles when they gaze,
they say, 'Gazelles,' though they are blades.
They say these are young mountain goats when they are censurers.
وَعِنْدَهُمُand in their view أنthat القدُودَthe figures نَوَاضِرٌfresh and flourishing

They think the slender forms are fresh and flourishing,
And to them the separation are coquettes
yet for lovers they are nothing but withered spears.
And they are not but temptresses for the lovers.
فَإنْso if حَكَمُواthey judge أنَّthat العُيُونَthe eyes صَوَارِمٌsharp swords

If they judge the eyes to be sharp swords,
So if they judge that the eyes are sharp swords,
their proof is that coquetry forms the sword-belts.
Then witness them, for the evidence carries gifts.

If they agree that breasts are spearheads,
And if they all agree that the breasts are spears,
their proof is that the figures are spear-shafts.
Then their proof is that the separations are carriers.

I am taken with a tender maiden; but for her mouth's smile,
In me is a young gazelle, if not for the smile of her mouth,
late afternoons would not be supplied with morning's light.
The light of dawn would not have lasted from her risings.

How beautifully the nightingales compliment her!

And if she reveals her clear beauty or glances,
how gentle the gifts those graces bestow!
How gentle are the gifts her qualities present!

In her I court the gazelle, and the gazelle is drowsy;
I flirt with the young gazelle while the gazelle sleeps,
in her I behold the full moon, and the moon is setting;
And observe the full moon while it is setting.

I kiss her mouth, and her mouth flashes;
And I kiss her mouth while her mouth smiles,
I bend her figure, and her figure is a spear-shaft.
And I embrace her stature and it is working.

The sun claims what the trailing length of her veil conceals,
The sun has what the excellence of her veil concealed,
and the bough claims what her fine robes button over.
And the branch what the visiting twigs adorned.

She came suddenly, while the sky was dyeing its temple-lock,
She came suddenly and the weather blushed its cheeks,
then departed as gray divided the horizon's hair-parting.
Then left and the hair of separation turned white.

At a time when the morning star was a horseman on the horizon,
At a time when the morning star in the horizon is a horseman
ranging about, while the star of night departed in the west.
Roaming while the star of night in the west halts.

pastures whose sheltered watering places were sweet?
Have the watering places become beautiful in their protection?

The mouth of the rose smiles at the mouth of its bud
and has that courting gazelle courted it?
And that flirting gazelle flirts with it.

As the qualities shook the branches?

Where the nightingales freely trilled?

Did the meadow give news from its easy comfort
tales delivered by the east breeze and the north winds?
That the morning breeze and the qualities presented?

As the rain of the tail ran, the ash-colored horsemen?

So lightnings were created for it, nightingales?

so Nuʿmān grew deserted and Babylon inhabited.
So the meadow saddened and the ruin prospered.

Levels above which the ambitious fall short.

those now departed had built up nothing but dwellings.
Inhabit anyone but the greatest.

The clouds of the eyelids of the caring wounds cry.

When the Berbers' fortress grew insolent, and
And when the fortress of the barbarians transgressed and their
its strongholds had boulders guarding their precincts,
Strongholds protected those under their care.
أقَامَestablished صَلاَةَthe prayer of الحَرْبِwar قَائِمُthe hilt of سَيْفهُhis sword

his sword's hilt established the prayer of war,
He stood erect with his sword performing the prayer of war
and those strongholds showed the prostration of fear.
So those strongholds bowed in fear.
وَخَاضَand plunged through بسفنِwith the ships of الخَيْلِhorses بحرَa sea of معَامعٍbattle uproars

With the ships of horses, he plunged into a sea of battle,
And he plunged into a sea of billows with the ships of cavalry
where bright swords were waves and spears were shores.
With the white as waves and the spears as coasts.
وأوَطُأand made tread هاَمthe crowns of الحَصنthe fortress حاَفرthe hoof of طَرفهhis steed

He made his steed's hoof trample the fortress's crowns,
And he stepped with his horse’s hoof atop the fortress’s pillar
which no assailant had uprooted before.
When no assailant had before destroyed a fortress.

There the Indian-forged blade cleaves,
Where the Indian swords are separators
charging, while men's heads are joints.
And the heads of men are joints.

There the bondwomen of the bereaved are freewomen,
And where the women of the fallen are free
and there the slain men's wives are bereaved.
And the women of the destroyed are mourners.

He struck it, when the tumult raged, with a blow
He threw it when passions were stirred with a strike
whose like his hands had dealt among kings.
Whose like from his hands against kings has no equal.
وَشَنَّand unleashed بِهِagainst it الغَارَاتِthe raids حَتَّىuntil لَقَدْindeed غَدَاbecame

He launched raids against it until at last
And he launched raids until he who remained behind the fortresses
the mind of the one behind the strongholds became rational.
Became reasonable while possessing fortresses.
وَمَاand not زَالَceased حَتَّىuntil اذعنَsubmitted الحصنthe fortress عُنْوَةًby force

He did not cease until the fortress yielded by force,
And he did not stop until the fortress submitted by force
and the tribes submitted in humiliation before him.
And the tribes, despite their small number, submitted to him.
وَحَكَّمَand appointed as judge فِيمَنْover those who لَدَّresisted عَنْهُagainst him مُهَنَّدٌan Indian-forged sword

He set an Indian sword to judge those who resisted him—
And he established the law for those who turned from him,
swift in judgment, true to its word and effective.
Muhanad, of swift and honest judgement.
وَقَدْand sometimes يَكْبرُgrows great الخطبُthe affair اليسيرsmall فَيَجْتَنِيso reap

A small affair may grow great, so that
Even small matters may overwhelm
a people's great men reap what their lowliest have wrought.
The elders of a people, whom the lowly did not overwhelm.

As Bakr destroyed the tyrants among its protectors,
Just as Bakr destroyed the tyrants of its sister tribe
there befell Bakr what Wāʾil exacted.
And what Wa'il legally claimed befell Bakr.
أيَاO مَالِكاًsovereign منْwhose طبعِهِhis nature الجدearnestness فيin النُّهَىwisdom

O sovereign, whose nature is earnest wisdom,
O Malik who is by nature serious in purpose
when a jester wastes deliberation in counsel!
If one is careless in planning the matter.
تُقَابِلُكَgreet you الأعْيَادُthe festivals ذَاthis one فِيon قُدُومِهِits arrival

The festivals greet you—this one upon its arrival
The holidays meet you upon arrival
with praise, and that with thanks as it departs.
One in praise and one in thanks as it departs.
كَأنَّas though هِلاَلَthe crescent of العِيدِthe festival زَوْرَقُthe skiff of قَادِمٍan arriving traveler

The festival crescent is like an arriving traveler's skiff,
As if the crescent of Eid were a coming boat
hastening with greetings, then continuing its visit.
That bids greetings then continues sailing.
أأجْحَدُكَwould I deny you النَعْمَاءَthe bounty عندِيwith me وَقدwhen already نَمَتْhas grown
نُمُوَlike the growth of الربَىthe hills جَادَتْlavished rain عَلَيْهَاupon them الهَوَاطِلُthe downpours
Could I deny your bounty to me, when it has grown
Shall I be stingy with bounty while it has grown for me
like hills richly watered by pouring rains?
And blessings have poured upon which the torrents flow?
وَاظهرتَand you revealed أمَرِيmy affairs بَعْدَafter أنْthat كَانَit was مختفٍhidden

You brought my affairs to light after they had been hidden,
You have shown my command after it was hidden
and raised my standing after it had been obscure.
And raised my worth after it was withheld.
فَلَسْتُso I am not أبَالِيconcerned جَادَlavished بِالخَيْرِwith goodness فَاضِلٌa virtuous man

So I care not whether a worthy man bestows good
So I do not care if one grants generously
upon a petitioner, or a miser withholds good.
Or is stingy in granting, withholding.

Live on, noblest of the exalted: your good fortune shines,
So may the highest live on, your prosperity apparent
your lot is blessed, and your glory complete.
And your stature auspicious and perfect.
