يَا سَيِّدِي لاَ تَعْتَقِدْ أنَّنِي

يَا سَيِّدِي لاَ تَعْتَقِدْ أنَّنِي

عَنْكُمْ تَأخَّرْتُ لضيقِ المَقَامْ

عَنْكُمْ تَأخَّرْتُ لضيقِ المَقَامْ

My lord, do not think that I

My master, do not think that I

have delayed coming to you because of straitened circumstances.

Delayed meeting you out of dislike or disdain

وَإنَّمَا الأيَّامُ تُولِي الفَتَى

وَإنَّمَا الأيَّامُ تُولِي الفَتَى

فيما يُرَجِّيه بعَكْسِ المَرَامْ

فيما يُرَجِّيه بعَكْسِ المَرَامْ

Rather, the days bestow upon a young man,

Rather, time makes a youth

in what he hopes for, the opposite of his aim.

Achieve the opposite of what he had hoped to attain

فَاحْلُمْ على الجَانِي وَلاَ تُقْصِهِ

فَاحْلُمْ على الجَانِي وَلاَ تُقْصِهِ

لأنَّكُمْ أهْلٌ الوَفَا وَالذِّمَامْ

لأنَّكُمْ أهْلٌ الوَفَا وَالذِّمَامْ

So be forbearing toward the offender, and do not cast him aside,

So be forgiving to the one at fault and do not rebuke him

for you are people of loyalty and honor.

For you are people of loyalty and high moral fibre

وَفِي غَدٍ إنْ شَاءَ رَبُّ العُلَى

وَفِي غَدٍ إنْ شَاءَ رَبُّ العُلَى

أسْتَغْنِمُ اللُّقْيَا بِكُمْ وَالسَّلاَمْ

أسْتَغْنِمُ اللُّقْيَا بِكُمْ وَالسَّلاَمْ

And tomorrow, if the Lord of the heights wills,

And tomorrow, if the Lord Most High wills

I shall seize the chance to meet you—and peace.

I will seize the chance to meet you in peace
