رُبَّmany a بَدْرfull moon ضَمَمْتُI embraced بَانَةَbān tree قَدّهْhis stature
وَغَزَالand a gazelle لَثَمْتُI kissed وَرْدَةَrose خَدّهْhis cheek
Many a full moon whose bān-tree stature I embraced,
Many a full moon I embraced slender of waist,
And many a gazelle whose cheek's rose I kissed,
And kissed a gazelle with cheeks of rose so chaste,
وَرِيَاضand gardens جَلَيْتُI dispelled فِيهَاin them هُمُومِيmy cares
وَسُرُورand joy سُقِيتُI was given to drink صَافِيَpure وِدّهْhis love
And many a garden where I dispelled my cares,
In meadows I dispelled my cares and sadness,
And many a joy, as I was given his pure love to drink,
And joy I drank from the pure spring of friendship graced.
وَزَمَانand a time قَطَعْتُI spent فِيهِin it وِصَالاًunion
بِحَبِيبwith a beloved حَلَلْتُI untied عُقْدَةَthe knot of بَنْدِهْhis girdle
And many a time I spent in union
A time when love unbroken I was blessed to taste,
With a beloved whose girdle-knot I untied.
With one whose knot of curls my hand fondly traced.
بِأبِيwith my father as ransom ألْعَسَdusky المَرَاشِفِthe lips ألْمَىdark-lipped
جَرَّعَhe made someone drink الصَّبَّthe lovelorn مِنْof مَرَارَةthe bitterness of صَدّهْhis rejection
My father be his ransom—dusky of lips, dark-lipped—
My father! The cushions' pain he bore in silence,
He made the lovelorn drink of the bitterness of his rejection.
And sipped the bitter cup unveiled by fate morose,
أسْبَلَhe let fall الشَّعْرَthe hair وَانْثَنَىand turned فَتَثَنَّىthen swayed
كَقَضِيبlike a slender branch يَجُرُّhe trails فَاضِلَthe excess of بُرْدِهْhis mantle
He let his hair fall and turned, then swayed,
His hair turned white, his form bent low in cadence,
Like a slender branch trailing his mantle's excess length.
Like rod weighed down by coat of mail threadbare from blows.
مَدَّhe extended صُدْغاًa temple-lock عَلَىover الخُدُودِthe cheeks فَأوْدَىand so destroyed
مُهْجَتِيmy soul وَالْحَشَاand the heart بِأرَقَمِwith the speckled serpent of جَعْدِهْhis curls
He stretched a temple-lock across his cheeks, and destroyed
His cheeks he cast on dusty cheeks conferring,
My soul and heart with the speckled serpent of his curls.
My soul and senses in confusion he did toss.
وَنَضَاand unsheathed اللَّحْظَthe glance فِيin الجُفُونِthe eyelids حُسَاماًa sharp sword
جَازَpassed فِيin الحَدّsharpness عَنْbeyond نِهَايَةِthe utmost limit of حَدّهْits edge
And within his eyelids unsheathed his glance as a sword
In his eyelids slumbered swords as thunder stirring,
That went, in sharpness, beyond the utmost limit of its edge.
And lightning in his glance flashed bright beyond all bounds.
