شَبَّهْتُI likened فَرْقَthe hair-parting of مُعَذِّبِيmy tormentor فيin فَرْعِهِhis locks
شَبَّهْتُ فَرْقَ مُعَذِّبِي في فَرْعِهِ
صُبْحًاto a dawn تَبَلَّجَbroke brightly تَحْتَbeneath لَيْلٍa night دَاجِpitch-dark
صُبْحًا تَبَلَّجَ تَحْتَ لَيْلٍ دَاجِ
I likened my tormentor’s parting amid his locks
I likened my tormentors' separation in its branches
to a dawn breaking beneath a pitch-dark night.
To a dawn that shone under a dark night
وَكَأنَّمَاand as though خِيلاَنُهُhis moles فِيon جِيدِهِhis neck
وَكَأنَّمَا خِيلاَنُهُ فِي جِيدِهِ
سَبَجاًjet تَرَصَّعَwas inlaid فيin نَقِيّpure العاجِivory
سَبَجاً تَرَصَّعَ في نَقِيّ العاجِ
And it is as though the moles upon his neck
As if its double strands of pearls on his neck
were jet inlaid in pure ivory.
Were chokers studded with pure ivory
