سَألْتُI asked مِنْfrom عَارِضِهِhis cheek قُبْلَةًa kiss
سَألْتُ مِنْ عَارِضِهِ قُبْلَةً
كَيْso that أجْتَنيI might reap سُقْيَاa draught منَfrom العَارِضِthe rain cloud
كَيْ أجْتَني سُقْيَا منَ العَارِضِ
I asked for a kiss from his cheek,
I asked for a kiss from the one who was passing by
so I might reap a draught from the rain cloud.
So I could quench my thirst from the one who was passing by
فَقَالَthen he said قَدْalready صَيَّرْتُهُI have made it عُدَّةًa reserve
فَقَالَ قَدْ صَيَّرْتُهُ عُدَّةً
فَقُلْتُthen I said لاَnot يُعْتَدُّis taken into account بِالْعَارِضِof the passing cloud
فَقُلْتُ لاَ يُعْتَدُّ بِالْعَارِضِ
He said, “I have made it a reserve.”
He said he had made it a habit
I replied, “A passing cloud is of no account.”
So I said fleeting things are not to be counted upon
