سَلاَمُpeace اللَّهِof God مَاas long as وَضَحَshines bright المُحَيَّاthe countenance
وَمَاand as long as أبْدَتْhas displayed تَحِيَّتَهَاtheir greeting الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades
God's peace, as long as the countenance shines bright,
God's peace, how the wine cleared up
And as long as the Pleiades offer their greeting,
And how its greeting shone through the vessels
عَلَىupon مَنْthe one who جَاءَنِيreached me مِنْهُfrom him نِظَامٌa string of verse
Upon the one from whom a string of verse reached me,
To the one who brought me some of it - a perfection
Resembling precious, gemlike pearls.
That told of precious ruby wine
يذكِّرْنِيhe reminds me بِلَيْلَتِنَاof our night الَّتِيwhich قَدْalready
غَداbecame كُلٌّeach one بِهَاduring it مِنَّاof us عَصِيَّاdisobedient
He reminds me of our night, when
Reminding me of our night that now
Each of us had become disobedient that night.
Each of us disobeys because of it
ويَسْألُنِيand he asks me سُؤَالَa plea أخِone offering اعْتِذَارٍan apology
وَقَدand already أقْلَعْتُI desisted عَنْfrom شُرْبِdrinking الحُمَيَّاwine
And asks me with an apologetic plea,
And asking me apologetically
Though I have given up drinking wine.
Though I've stopped drinking the fermentation
وَيُوصِفُهَاand he describes it لذِيto one with صَمَمٍdeafness ومنand who ذَاis it
رَأىhas seen صَمَماًdeafness يجيبanswers نِداًa call خَفِيَّاfaint
And describes it to a deaf man—and who
Describing it to the deaf and who can
Has seen deafness answer a faint call?
Make the deaf hear a soft call?
فَيَاso, O دَاعِيyou who summon الخَلِيّone free of passion إلَىto التَّصَابِيyouthful dalliance
لقدindeed أسْمَعْتَyou made yourself heard لَوْif نَادَيْتَyou called حَيَّاsomeone alive
So, you who call one free of passion to youthful dalliance,
So my negligent friend calling me to drink
You would surely have made yourself heard had you called someone alive.
You would have heard me respond if you called the living
أتَطْمَعُdo you hope أنْthat أجيبَI answer نِدَاكَyour call فيهَاconcerning it
وكيفَand how وقدand already غَدتْit has become شياa thing فَرِيَّاoutrageous
Do you hope I will answer your call to it?
Can I hope to answer your call in it
And how could I, when it has become an outrageous thing?
When it's become a thing long past?
وَقَدْand indeed أمْسَىhas become الرَّشِيدُthe prudent man بِهَاthrough it سفيهًاa fool
كماjust as أضْحَىhas become السعيدthe happy man بِهَاthrough it شَقِيَّاwretched
And through it the prudent man has become a fool,
The steadfast turned foolish in it
Just as the happy man has become wretched through it.
As did the happy turn miserable
وَهَبْكَand suppose you صَدَقْتَyou spoke truly لوif صَادَفْتَyou encountered صَبّاًa lovesick man
وَلَكِنْand yet لَمْdid not تَجِدْyou find إلاَّexcept خَلِيَّاone free of passion
And grant you would have been right had you met a lovesick man,
You spoke truly, if you met a youth
But you have found only one free of passion.
But you found only an old man
فَدَعْنِيso leave me وَاطَّرِحْand cast aside لَوْمِيblaming me فَإنِّيfor indeed I
رَأيْتُI saw الرَّشْدَsound judgment فيin الصهباءِtawny wine غَيَّاfolly
So leave me, and stop reproaching me, for I
So leave me be and forgive my blame
Have found wisdom in tawny wine to be folly.
For I saw sanity in sobriety
لِذَاكَfor that reason اللَّهُGod حَرَّمَهَاhe forbade it عَلَيْنَاto us
وَأوْعَدَand he threatened فيin الجحيمِHell بِهَاbecause of it صُلِيَّاburning
That is why God has forbidden it to us,
That's why God forbade it for us
And threatened burning in Hell because of it,
And promised agonizing punishment for it
وَضَاعَفَand he multiplied فيin العذابِthe torment لِمَنْfor whoever أتَاهَاhe turned to it
وَصَيَّرَand he made حَالَهُhis condition حَالاًa condition زَرِيَّاdegraded
And multiplied the torment for whoever turned to it,
And doubled the punishment for whoever seeks it
And made his condition a degraded one.
And made his state deplorable
يَعِزُّit is grievous عَلَيَّto me أنْthat ضَيَّعْتُI squandered عُمْرِيmy life
بِهَاon it سَفَهًاfoolishly وَماand did not حَصَّلْتُI gain شَيَّاanything
It grieves me that I squandered my life
It hurts me that I wasted my life
On it in folly, and gained nothing,
Stupidly with it, gaining nothing
وَلَمْand did not أظْفَرَI obtain بِطَائِلَةٍany benefit وَيَاand ah هَلْwill ...?
أرَانِيI see myself لاَnothing عَلَيَّagainst me وَلاَand nothing لَدَيَّاto my credit
And won no benefit—ah, shall
Did I get any use, woe is me
I see myself with nothing against me and nothing to my credit?
With nothing for me or by me?
وَمَنْand whoever شَابَتْهُhave tainted him بِالإثْمِwith sin المَعَاصِيtransgressions
فَكَيْفَthen how تَخَالُهُyou suppose him مِنْهَاof them بَرِيَّاinnocent
And one whom transgressions have tainted with sin—
And who sins tastes it -
Then how could you suppose him innocent of them?
How can you see him innocent of it?
وَقَدْand indeed آلَيْتُI swore إذْwhen أقْلَعْتُI desisted عَنْهَاfrom it
بِأنِّيthat I لاَnot أعُودI become again بِهَاto it حَفِيَّاdevoted
And I vowed, when I gave it up,
I have promised by quitting it
That I would never again be devoted to it,
That I will not return to it
لَعَلَّperhaps اللَّهَGod يَرْحَمُنِيhe has mercy on me وَيَعْفُوand he pardons
وَيَغْفرand he forgives مَاwhat جَنَتْهُhas wrought it يَدِيmy hand عَلَيَّاagainst me
Perhaps God will have mercy on me and pardon me,
Maybe God will have mercy on me and pardon
And forgive what my hand has wrought against me,
And forgive what my hands did to me
وَيَسْقِينِيand he gives me drink بِهَاin its stead يَوْمَthe day of التَّقَاضِيreckoning
شَرَاباًa drink سَلْسَبِيلاًSalsabil (sweet-flowing) سُكَّرِيَّاsugar-sweet
And give me, in its stead, on the Day of Reckoning,
And give me on Judgement Day
A draught of Salsabil, sweet as sugar.
A drink of Salsabeel, sweet and pure
