وَمَاand what بَالُis the matter with بَرْقِthe lightning of الثَّغْرِthe mouth فِيin غَيْهَبِthe deep darkness of اللَّمَىthe lips' dusky hue
يُعَلِّقُhangs آمَالِيmy hopes بِذَيْلِupon the hem of مَطَامِعِيmy desires
And why does the mouth's lightning, amid the gloom of dusky lips,
hang my hopes upon the hem of my desires?
جَعَلْتُI made الحَشَاthe innermost heart مُسْتَوْدَعَa repository for الهَمّworry وَالأسَىand sorrow
فَهَلاَّso why not جَعَلْتِyou made الصَّبْرَpatience إحْدَىone of الودَائِعِthe deposits
I made my heart a repository for worry and sorrow;
then why did you not make patience one of its deposits?
وَصَيَّرْتِand you turned مَارِسْتَانَthe asylum of قَلْبِيَmy heart مَوْطِنًاinto a home

And you turned my heart's asylum into a home
for one maddened by longing, whom my tears have chained.
