سَبَتْseized أيديthe hands of السماءthe sky لُجَيْنَthe silver of شمسٍa sun
سَبَتْ أيدي السماء لُجَيْنَ شمسٍ
وَأخْفَتْهُand hid it مِنَfrom اللَّيْلِthe night البَهِيمِpitch-black
وَأخْفَتْهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ البَهِيمِ
A sun’s silver radiance captivated heaven’s hands,
The hands of the sky seized the silver of a sun,
and they hid it from the pitch-black night.

فَحَجَّرَهَاso stoned them الدُّجَىthe darkness بشهابwith a meteor رَجْمٍstoning
فَحَجَّرَهَا الدُّجَى بشهاب رَجْمٍ
وَسَمَّرَهَاand nailed them fast بِمِسْمَارِwith the nail of النُّجُومِthe stars
وَسَمَّرَهَا بِمِسْمَارِ النُّجُومِ
So darkness turned them to stone with a meteor of stoning,
So darkness stoned them with a meteor hurled as a stone,
and nailed them fast with the stars’ own nail.
